Spots on my helmet!

Took helmet out of it’s sheep skin lined bag to find the gel coat has blistered all over (Bell mag 6)
Any Ideas?
Should I replace it?
Is it safe?
Sent a message to Bell via their web site but no reply as yet

It’s kept on a shelf in the garage
4 years old

I would think you could just get it re-lacquered. Could be a good excuse to get a flashy paint job on it!!

I’d thought I might paint it but worried that if I go to that trouble more mole hills might appear over time.
Recon I might have a go at the ultimate DIY carbon wrap.
Always like a challenge???
Be like wrapping up a football as a Christmas pressie!

Strip and repaint.

I am sure the local clinic can prescribe some cream for this problem

Looks like the paint work on my S1.

:frowning:

Yet another reason never to buy BELL again.

Worst quality and VfM helmets I have ever had.

Bit of elbow grease and some old paint I found in the garage
Pic does not do colour justice it is actually Fluro yellow.
Should look ok when buffed up.
Well… it was either repaint or buy a new one.
If I look like a dick in it recon I might have to buy a new lid
Won’t be a Bell tho!!

all done…not too bad really??

Some green and white Senna stripes and jobs a good un !

Very good!

looks good, never thought of spraying my own helmet.

Do you not need to use special helmet paint ?

Bell mag 6 is fibre glass.
I think it is acrylic skid lids you need to be careful with, even stickers can be harmful on some if I recall.
Paint I used was left over when I painted my towing eye

eye paint on your helmet.

I cant believe this thread hasn’t gone to shit yet. hahaha

I would check before you use it to be on the safe side .

Looks like your helmet had a dose of the ‘pox’ mate!

Osmosis… perhaps you but it away damp one day???

Anyway, nice respray!!!

Osmosis… perhaps you but it away damp one day???

please explain. I’d like to know

Of course Bell never got back to me :frowning:

The blisters are where moisture has been trapped under the outer lacquer. This can be a result of the original manufacture, where the lacquer has been applied too soon, or can be moisture due to the way the helmet has been stored, eg. if it has been cold/damp.

I’d suggest keeping it in the house rather than in the garage and preferably in a thin helmet bag rather than anything thicker; in itself a lined bag is likely to retain any moisture more readily than a thin one.

Also, always allow plenty of time for it to dry out after using it before storing it; it might also be worth putting in a couple of silica gel desiccant bags when it’s being stored (there are often small ones in the packaging of electronic items, eg. cameras, etc. that are fine for the purpose).

These chemically absorb water and are incredibly effective as they can hold their own weight in water - so even a small one weighing 10g or so will hold 10ml of water (which is quite a lot - try spilling 10ml to see!).

Hope that helps and remember - always look after yer helmet!!

Thank you
well explained
Keep it indoors!
