Speakers

Now I understand that the speakers and aerial came as part of the RFK (Radio Fitting Kit) on the S1. My car seems to have the speakers but never has had any radio fitted. Is it just me or was the RFK a pretty common option on S1s because nearly every Exige I’ve seen in photos has the aerial (and hence the speakers as well most likely). Are there ones out there that don’t have speakers/never had them? Or was it one of those “options” that just became standard after a while?

Of course I’ll be removing the speakers and pods pretty soon I think. Don’t see the point of having speakers if I don’t have a radio I’ll hang on to them though in case I get soft in my old age

I see they’re mounted differently to the Elise and it might actually give me a bit more room behind the seats for stowage

RFK was a 150 option, & most cars were built with it. You’ve got to remember that they were initially slow sellers, so Lotus built a load & held them in stock awaiting customer orders. The factory was at that time gearing up to produce the VX for Vauxhall/Opel, so it made sense to have a “production run” of Exiges, rather than wait for individual customer orders.

Pah, be a real Exige owner and pull the whole rear panel out. It quite heavy you know ;p

Aah, that makes sense, I thought it’d be something like that.

Will probably remove the speakers. If you remove the rear panel, what’s behind it, is it similar to what the Elise is? I don’t see the point in keeping it in thre if it’s doing nothing, but if it makes the inside of the car look like a builders’ yard, then I’ll probably leave it there for now

ECU and wires.

I removed the speakers in mine, but kept the speaker covers on…that way it doesn’t look like a builders yard but you still have most of the weight saving advantage

Aah that’s right.

Great minds think alike! That’s exactly what I was going to do. I’ll do that right away. I suppose if I want to I can always make up a mould and re-fab the panel out of carbonfibre.

So what do the non-RFK cars have in place of the rear panel that the RFK cars have? Do they just have the speaker-holes blanked off? or is there a non-RFK rear moulding?

Please bear in mind I’ve not studied the car in great depths yet, it’s in being complied for road legality and the speakers were just something I noticed after poking my head back there for a minute, so apologies for the noob-like questions

No worries…I’m still posting noob like questions !!

I’m really LOVING the car though…for some reason I feel like a little kid in it…it’s the most useless (for anything but being on track) and most fun car I’ve ever owned!

Couldn’t have said it better myself… only done 12 miles in mine so far, 11 of which was in a traffic jam, but even when she’s being a shunty, grizzly trafficbitch, she still makes me grin like an idiot… I’ve not been above 4000RPM yet… I’m more than happy with her just like that but I’ve got a feeling that 4000RPM is just where the fun starts

Can’t BELIEVE how much attention it gets though… I’m sure it just about caused 2 accidents in those 12 miles from people gawking instead of looking where they’re going!

I’ve not been above 4000RPM yet…

errr I think you will find all the fun between 5 and 8k

Ooh! Then I’m even MORE impressed!

You might get worried instead when you hear the engine at those kind of revs

Heh, fear not, I’m used to the K-series clatter
