06 May 2010
With just 45 days to go, things are shaping up nicely for a fantastic Festival weekend!
Car owners from as far a-field as America are responding to the call for them to bring their prized possessions to Snetterton, with the result that we are on course to see a full grid with an example of every Formula 1 car raced by Team Lotus, from Type 12 that saw Colin Chapmans team enter the Grand Prix arena in 1957, right up to the Type 109 from the early 1990s and including the 31 Formula 1 Type numbers in between.
Whats more, Lotus Racing the organisation that has returned the name to the grid this year is pulling out all the stops to be present at the Festival too. Despite it falling at a busy time between the Canadian and European GPs they are keen to join in the fun, not least because the European GP to be held at Valencia, Spain, will mark the 500th appearance of Lotus in a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
Says Clive Chapman of Classic Team Lotus: The generous response of F1 car owners has been tremendous, such that the idea of one of every Team Lotus F1 car has arisen. It has never been done before, and who knows if it would ever happen again?
Meanwhile, work has been going on a-pace at CTLs Hethel workshops to ready the Type 38/1 in time. Things are on schedule with the restoration of Jim Clarks 1965 Indianapolis-winning machine, with the car due to be set down on the floor by the end of this week. The race is on to meet the deadline for a photoshoot that will see her star as the cover girl on the front of Motor Sport magazines June issue, due out ahead of the Snetterton Festival.
Restoration of another famous ex-Clark Lotus has already been completed, and in fact Type 49/R2, with which Jimmy gave the Lotus-DFV combo its very first victory in the 1967 Dutch GP, ran in the hands of Chris MacAllister at last weekends prestigious Monaco Historique event. Despite going well in qualifying, gearbox problems intervened in the race. Nevertheless, the evocative green and yellow racer was the star of the weekend. Undoubtedly shell attract lots of attention at Snetterton too.
With Lotus Cars, Lotus Engineering and Lotus Sport also getting together to bring along a whole range of Lotus road and racing cars, not to mention action-packed rounds of the Lotus Cup Europe and Elise Trophy race series, the Snetterton Festival on 19/20 June is going to be an absolutely un-missable occasion for Lotus enthusiasts everywhere
