my mechanic called me this morning and told me my front discs have cracks around the holes, a classic for drilled discs.
i knew about these cracks, my idea was to finish the discs this season and change them for grooved discs
i guess he’s afraid because one of his customers broke his dics at a TD after he noticed the cracks
you can notice the cracks on these (blurry) pics
it doesn’t look that bad IMO but i’d like your advice
do i need to change my discs now?
ot it can wait?
i plan 2 to 3 more TD this season and i ain’t a driving god
Don’t do a TD, in fact don’t do very much, change them now.
A small crack on mine expanded very quickly.
I’m sure Dave will chirp in soon…(got my floaters in stock yet or are you this week mostly doing carbon?)
More a question of whats the reason for the holes, used to be to stop pad glazing but that went with asbestos. Most stuff is slotted now, but some even question the needs for the slots.
The cast disks are weakened by the holes and it’s common for them to crack around and between the holes.
Happened to a couple of sets of the standard discs from Lotus on mine.
Swapped for aftermarket grooved ones and never had any further problems.
Eliseparts grooved discs also serve as wear indicators - when the groove disappears it’s time to change the disc - very easy to see without having to mess about measuring disc thickness!

Floaters Hmmmmm…
The fully floating bells are almost ready apparently, being lazer etched this week.
Will be in touch when they are ready.
