Has anyone any experience with either a 4/2/1 or a 4/1 extractor on the Yota engine?
With carbs I used to get between 5 - 10 % increase just by swapping the old (usually crap) cast iron manifolds.
This was on older 4 Cyl engines Ie Pinto / GM etc…
Not much info on performance figures from what I’ve found yet regarding the Toyota.
Seems more people fit them on Rover engined S1’s with success.
Is it jusy because fewer people are tuning the toyota or are other mods more productive do you think?
Not being funny (honest), but shouldn’t you be getting some trackdays under your belt, before this sort of modification, otherwise what’s the point when you’ve no idea what you/your car is actually capable of???
Are you offering to be my coach?
Yes M8 … trackdays very soon I promise!
Obviously the car will be very much more capable than me…
I enjoy modding my kit very much tho… same as you probably?
I have a week off next week (any suggestions for trackday?)
It’s a very mild modification tho Rob ? (not like my last one)
Always have enjoyed modding since I can remember…I’m cutting down on my flying (selling it) and as such will have much more time/money available for tatting with cars again as I used to some yrs ago.
Like to get others views on what i,m comtemplating hence the question
P.S what you doing up so late ? your Horlicks should be slurped down by now .
Horlicks lol Rob has a cup used engine oil before bedtime…direct from his S1 sump You know imho this is where all S2 owners should start. Yea I know handling brakes bla bla but the back end looks so cheap in standard form, it sounds either too quiet or too loud and the whole package weighs a ton. So for not much work and not too much $ a tidy looking easy breathing 421 is the way to go!
For trackdays, suggest you keep your eye on the Lotus On Track, & Bookatrack websites - extremely well organised, & friendly peeps.
For instruction, I recommend a few sessions with the Organiser’s team - they know what they’re doing, unlike me!
Manifold - certainly “mild” in terms of performance gains - can it be done with the engine in situ?
Modding - yep, most of us are “guilty” of doing that for pleasure, as well as for performance.
Bearing in mind that realistically, a trackday is going to cost in the region of 500 all in, you do need to get 10 or so under your belt to give yourself a chance to learn about your car’s characteristics, before embarking upon performance modifications. Surprising how many Porsches/Fezzas costing tens of thousands of pounds appear on trackdays, but which are slower than even a basic plastic pig.
Keep on trucking!
PS Jonnyfox - for a change, yesterday I tried Ovaltine - hallucinated all night!
I agree with all the above about driver training
But the manifold can be done there are several out there 2bular quiksilver etc, however you will need the engine map done to get any gain in fact if you don’t there is a risk of loosing power and running very lean so be careful and don’t believe the hype, on the plus side with a tune a manifold is worth around 10hp peak and a good spread of extra torque in the mid range. My advice is to get training then look at power after suspension and brakes, then you can be inline for a large power boost not just a little

Give Sinclaires a call I believe they have a 4-2-1 setup puttin out some nice numbers…
Track days do nothing for your driving skills in the real world…turn up the power and drive the crap out of it…after all it’s a road car not a "track " car…

not to stereotype Frank but that sounds so very American… I can almost hear the B52’s overhead, brilliant mate absolute class
I prefer the B52’s on the stage, and come on class, you guys came up with Benny Hill and Little Britian…
Really the only guys who don’t need more power are the guys too cheap to pay for it… yeah you still need skills and you even need more skills with increased power if you push the loud pedel down…but it is so cool to smoke your mates down the straights and relax in the corners…why put yourself and something you worked so hard for at risk…it’s a street car after all and at the end of a nice track day you’re not gettin paid or laid so enjoy…

B52’s are so 60’s …
Could not agree more, its nice to learn how to drive your car on track and I have started trying. But road driving is a totally different skill and as my car spends 99% of its time on the road then its nice to be able to actually overtake without worry plus I just like the feeling of raw power and that shove in your back
I also love the twisty stuff and the way my car feels, which is a good job seeing as I always dreamed of a lotus since being a kiddy.
Anyhow Peskys logic is flawed, I am not getting into any arguments but why his first reply to anyone who asks about an upgrade is to learn how to drive it properly is beyond me as he drives one of the most modified exiges I have seen.
Now if Pesky and Gav Kershaw lined up at Oulton park, Rob in his and Gav in a std S1 190 VHPD my last fiver is on Gav to drive it home first, therefore Rob cannot drive one as well as it could be driven and so does not practice what he preaches
