S2 Std Gearbox Gearing

Here’s a question for all you C64 std gearbox monkeys who were at Anglesey last week…

Which gear did you use through Church corner ??? (the fast right hander after the hairpin that comes after the pit straight)

I found 3rd was too high mid corner and 4th too low for the entry :frowning:

I always struggle with that corner - maybe it’s because the gearing doesn’t suit certain tracks

4th for me.

4th for me and 5th up to rocket? I’m on the limiter in 3rd by the apex but that is probably down to the Jubu gearing which is a little different?

4th for me also and then 5th not long after, with standard ratios.

If 3rd is too long and 4th too short, you are going too slow through the corner before!!

Its a 3rd gear corner in the 111r just snatching 4th on the exiit clipping point and then 4th all the way up to rocket, you think you’ll need 5th but as the climb gets steeper the gear just hangs out for long enough.

In a s/c car it would have been a 4th gear corner using the mid range torque and most deffo 5th upto rocket. The NA cars just haven’t got the drive you need in the mid rev range…

It the hardest corner on the whole circuit to get right IMHO. I found the best approach is not to brake at all for it. Instead give a small lift just before you would have used the brakes, get the front end turned in for a late apex then reapply the throttle once the car has settled over on it’s suspension. It upsets the balance of the car way too much if you use the brakes as it’s all happening just at the point when you want to be turning in.

I would need a very large brave pill just to lift and not brake a bit for church :astonished:

I was dabbing the brakes to load up the front just before turning in. Late turn in is the key, but I agree with Gav, its a very tough corner to get right.

I love it…a great corner !!

Same as me but I was probably taking a bit more speed off than some, my jab on the brakes is probably taking off 5mph? not sure really too busy looking where I was going…

Exactly that… It all becomes too busy by using the brakes, as you say you only need to scrub a little bit of speed off… Next time your there try it out, it becomes so much easier to get it right and as Dave says, it’s a great corner when you do…

I’ll take a brave pill and give it a go next time Gav

Just build up to it slowly as you would if you were using the brakes by picking the point to lift.

Thanks

So what gear through the hairpin then Mr Mohawky man ??? - don’t tell me - second

only use 2nd at radar for me

There plus the hairpin (not the BaT banking) for second for me.

I tried both at the hairpin and found it made no difference to my speed at the braking point if anything I was a bit faster when I used 3rd as I was saving a gear change on the exit of the corner

Without doubt the scariest corner if you happen to get it wrong :astonished:. Surely everyone must have experienced those rumble strips at some time. I’m in forth but feathering the throttle, cannot open up confidently until two thirds round for fearing of pushing the car too wide. Having said that my car is box standard Lotus sport (Bilstein)suspension so may not be quite as pointy as your car Chris. As for rocket I used to go for second but now prefer third due to lost time in the gearchange
