DEH83 - send me a message whenever you’re next going somewhere like Donington - I’ll try to get booked on the same day!

Just documenting this for my own reference…

Nice weather over the weekend, so I changed the spark plugs, changed the gearbox oil (trying to get the car level on my wonky driveway was quite a challenge!), flushed the brake and clutch fluid. Now I’m just waiting for my Radium fuel rail and I’m going to fit it together with the new 450cc injectors and then tweak my ECU so it knows about them

Might try to get booked in to RRR for a tune afterwards, but will have to see when the fuel rail arrives…

If anyone wants a set of FiveO Motorsport 450cc custom Denso injectors, then let me know - I have a spare set… don’t ask, it’s a long and very stressful story

Elahrairah

Spent the day at RRR Engineering and my car was so powerful it broke the dyno!! *

NA Rocks!

  • not entirely true… turns out the dyno was broken so they couldn’t do a power run, so have to go back a different day! Sounded much better in the first sentence though, so…

First dry day I’ve ever had at Cadwell Park - what an amazing track! Car was going brilliantly - managed to lap a second faster than my friend’s Elise 250 Cup which I’ll take as a good result for now - definitely need driver training though to make the most of the car!

Awesome day!

Cadwell intrigues me and scares me at the same time. Ill put it on my list of tracks to do

I raced there in my late teens… what a circuit - but you are right… its scary, especially two abreast up the hill opposite the start line :open_mouth:

Cadwell is epic, maybe even my favourite despite trying to kill me once already :lolno:

Sounds like car is going well, we need some videos next time

As soon as I can turn a respectable lap time, I’ll post a video, lol! I may be some time… :lolno:

Just speed the footage up a bit

Cadwell demands respect, like Goodwood.

Haven’t updated this in ages, but I suppose that’s because I moved house and haven’t had time for the car until recently… I went through my box of parts that had been removed from the car and had a better look at my old (standard) cams… and noticed this on the intake cam!

Keep in mind, these were standard cams from a 2004 model that had done 30,000 miles when they were removed! All lobes looked flawless, apart from this one - which also showed a really odd patch of metal away from the tip, and then the tip itself had clear wear. Just this one lobe though - all the others were fine! I’ve got Piper Stage 2 cams now, but I was quite surprised to find this on the standard cams - guess they’re just junk now… Interestingly, the car went very well compared to my friend’s 2006 111R - he thought that mine was a shade quicker, so definitely wasn’t hurting performance in any noticeable way, but just a bit worrying!

The cams were swapped by Lotus main dealer and he didn’t mention there were any problems, but now I’m thinking I’m going to have to pull them out and check if there’s any wear to the rocker on that cylinder! :unamused:

Is it Cyl3 by any chance? I seem to recall that being the common one for wiped lobes.

Your pic looks very similar to the ones from my Elise, 2006 and 45kish miles when mine were noticed. I never even took my cam cover off with that car, it was the next owner who discovered the state of the cams.

From what I’ve heard, generally you either get wiped cams or you don’t. And if you get a wiped cam, it can show signs like that as early as 10-15k miles. Jury still out on the cause, but it stinks of a dodgy batch to me based on the inconsistencies from car to car.

Cylinder 1, I think? (closest to the chain). Bit depressed about having to take the camshaft out to check for wear to the rockers, as the tech should’ve noticed and checked this when the camshaft was installed in the first place - but worse stuff happens, I guess!

Yeah, I also just think there was a duff batch - the metal on the camshaft just doesn’t look right away from the tip - like there’s something odd about it…

…aaaand, the same lobe of my 2,000 mile old Piper Stage 2 camshaft is now also getting wear on it thanks to the Lotus tech not spotting the original issue and reusing a worn rocker. sigh :unamused:

Anyone handy with a set of spanners and have a spare day?

I was thinking about this over the weekend, the worn rocker should still be suspect #1 but it might be worth rigging up some sort of test rig for oil flow through the cam cover. I did read about a couple of cam-wipe accounts that showed the squirter hole in the oil pipe was skewed a bit and wasn’t spraying evenly on one lobe.

Exciting day today!

Just got back from dropping the car at track-group for some attention after spotting my possible issue…

They’ll fit a new rocker, checkout the Piper cam and see if it is okay or not, if not just replace… At the same time, they’re taking the head off, fitting new valves for some higher-rpm safety, taking a look at port-matching the head to meet the inlet/exhaust manifold nicely, refitting with the ever-so-slightly thinner Cosworth head gasket (I’ll take any compression ratio increase as a win!), putting it all back together with new cam chain, chain slippers, tensioner and intake camshaft sprocket (just to be certain everything is spot on as I have had a strange noise since the lift bolt disappeared down past the chain!) then onto their engine dyno for a proper mapping session and seeing what they can get out of it!

Also getting them to fit a front ARB and braided hoses at the same time…

Hopefully should come back even healthier - yay!

Super! Let us know the outcome

Excellent, who doesn’t love a fix with a bit of scope creep?

Exactly… why just get it fixed, when you can make it better?!
