S2 NA + Mods

I think I have the same disease as you!

Where did you buy the manifold ?
I saw that MWR had some for sale too

the ideal would be to be able to find only the runners

I bought the Corolla manifold (plenum and runners) from MWR. If you were to ask Webbs Styling to port the runners, he charged me Ā£50 surcharge for the runners themselves, so if I return my runners to him, he’ll refund me Ā£50… it’s a fair amount to post mine to him, so I’m happy to just keep mine for any future projects… You’ll need the gasket that goes between the runners and the r9k velocity stacks - keep that in mind too

ok, thanks for the info, did you buy manifold new or used like this link ? : https://www.monkeywrenchracing.com/product/toyota-oem-intake-manifold-corollamatrix-2zz-ge-used/
I would ask Webbs Styling to do it for me too but I’m in France and it’s quite complicated now since the brexit… :frowning:

I bought a used one from MWR - just like that  I’ll be trying to fit it all together over the weekend hopefully - then I’ll know for certain it fits, not just hoping/guessing, lol!

I keep my fingers crossed for you

You should be able to fit a larger throttle body. I think people are fitting Infiniti Q45 TBs. Might be worth if confirmed that the width of the TBs align with the one of the intake plenum.

I’m still doing the job, but I can confirm the r9ktuned plenum does fit in the space we have available… but it’s much tighter than the OEM intake…

Nice work Matt !
It is strage that the Rk9 set up is tighter than the OEM, as based on pitcures, I would have bet that the OEM is bigger…anyway, all good news ! And well done for trying these things, which to my knowledge, has never been done on a Lotus before. The question now is whether you’ll be required to do a remap to get most of the benefits this intake may bring. I suspect you would.
Nico

Thanks Nico!

Yeah, I was surprised to find it was a tight fit in the end, it’s just that the runners shift the whole unit slightly further towards the firewall than the original Celica manifold… It looks like it’ll be fine, but I think I need to relocate the 2 separate relays that were previously in their default position, and if you have the OEM ECU I think that might be another issue too - luckily my EMU Black is smaller and positioned off to the side a bit…

I agree, it’ll need tuning to map it properly - will get that sorted in due course… in the meantime, I have a Wideband lambda and the ECU can adjust to compensate for the (small) extra air… Just need to get it working and back together

I didn’t think that the new runners were so far away from the plenum.
Anyway, congratulations for the assembly. I’ll have to adapt the air intake pipe.
Can’t wait to hear what you think about the modification

Is there a update after the install Matt? :slightly_smiling_face:

Still waiting on some results… I was plagued by a slight leak between the mating faces of the runners and the new plenum… I got so fed up (and accidentally gave myself carbon monoxide poising chasing the leak…) that I asked TrackGroup to try to sort it for me, which they’re currently doing, along with a number of other bits I wanted sorting…. Hopefully will hear from them soon… I’ll let you know if I discover anything!

I’m becoming increasingly sceptical about the high output numbers of NA 2ZZs across the world - unless I go for different pistons and increase the compression ratio, I’m basically reaching the end of the mod list, and despite that I’m at roughly 210bhp (before this intake mod) which is lower than some people who have just had a manifold and ECU… which is nuts! Tested at the same place, tuned by the same guy… different days though…

I am not sure, and I have not seen many stock or mildly modified 2ZZ NA engines getting much more than 210 bhp…this is already quite healthy ! There might be some further poneys to find with a fully adjustable ECU (e.g. motec) and the engine internal modification you mentioned above, bu what will you be getting from all of this…230bhp maybe…not much more…and the cost will be quite high.

Full blown NA engines with corsworth internals, etc… have been measured at around 245bhp in Australia or the US:

Just checking in with an update… Went to Donington with MSVTrackdays on Monday, had a great time! Car running really nicely and got lots of laps in, with some great weather!

Gratuitous photos incoming!

I do need some new pads all round now though… Which is a trickier decision than I imagined… I’m half tempted to go with CL RC6 just to see what they’re like, but also tempted to try PF 11 on the front PF 08 on the rear? I just have no idea, but I do know I haven’t enjoyed these Paid RS14 as much as normal (pad transfer)

Nice pictures!

Any numbers after the install of the new intake?

like these threads, i hope to go s/c next month ,so will be interesting to see the before and after power runs, as mentioned RRR were telling me 215 bhp with full system and emu on my n/a. the pull of s/c was too strong so going over to the dark side, just need to sell my kidney to pay for it

I’m back on the OEM intake right now - I need some time to put the new intake on carefully… Last time, it had a slight leak and on part-throttle you could just hear a little hissing noise, and it was awkward to start, so clearly not right. I think it was because I reused the gasket from the Corolla manifold that joins the runners to the plenum.

So right now, I’m at 210bhp (according to RRR) with a large amount of mods, cams, valves, headwork, slightly increased compression ratio, full 2bular, EMU Black, Fidanza flywheel, etc. The car goes really well both on the low and high cam now, but I’m hoping to see a little extra power released when the new intake is fitted and mapped. It might turn into a job for the Autumn when work calms down?

Been adding a few road miles the last couple of weeks and noticed that it’s starting to become awkward to change gears under hard acceleration/high revs… Also, I’ve thought for a LONG time that I can hear a lot of clutch chatter/throw out bearing noise… could this be related? Any ideas of what to look at? At slower engine speeds, it changes gear cleanly.
