s2 exige with a/c: alternator belt route ?

went to fit replacement belt yesterday - at first i thought the tensioner was seized because i couldn’t budge it but now i’ve treated myself to a shiny new little 12" breaker bar i can confirm that’s springing just fine.

problem is about 3 inches of slack in the belt and i can’t see any less worse route to fit it around the pulleys.

have googled to death, only pics i can find is the de roure one (elise) and some reprints from a corolla manual.

here’s how i currently have it - even sliding it round the crank by hand it shows signs of slipping sideways so i haven’t turned on the engine in case it mangles itself.

scratch that, someone just pointed me toward this -

Some pulleys are ribbed, to go on the ribbed side of the belt, and others flat…
Shouldn’t fit any other way.
Standard pulley I take it?

yep, standard pulley.

my initial googling led me to threads on lotustalk where people had pics up that i think came from toyota (vs lotus) service manuals. they show the detour via the water pump as coming between the compressor and the alternator. which is plausible and would work if the belt was a bit tighter.

standard belt is 1928mm, check you have that size, it will also work with a 3.1 pulley

That looks familiar, I wonder where I have seen that before??

that’s the 240R engine - same layout as the S. after a lengthy battle with the tensioner, i got it on. working fine now.

That picture is actually of Lotus Motorsport’s old 2ZZ show engine…

aha.

well anyway, that’s how the belt goes in an S with a/c.

i guess that postponing the detour to the water pump affords more contact and traction on the s/c pulley.
