Looking for a spare set of wheels (S1 Exige) with wet weathers tyres if anyone can help please send me a pm
Cheers Harvey
Sorted - many thanks SimonE
Harvey,
I was thinking of doing this. What wet weather tyres have you gone for? How ‘wet’ does the track have to be minimum for these to work? Do you know how these ‘feel’ when driving on the track?
I’m a scaredy cat wet driving numpty - but I hate to think that I will lose the odd track day due to wet weather, and want some tyres that will give me some ‘pay back’
Cheers,
Clive.
Clive - wet tyres, read road tyres as opposed to R888s!
A few of us are doing the Spa / Croix double header in March and the unpredictable Spa weather could ‘dampen’ the fun hence the road tyres.
SimonE has a set of Rimstocks with A039s for sale which should fit the bill. I trailer the car to track days and have a big empty T5 as the tow vehicle, so carrying the spare set of tyres wont be a problem and should as you say ‘give me some payback’ with our unpredictable weather.
My pleasure Harvey
Harvey,
Right - o. I actually have a spare set of wheels to stick some alternative tyres on. What road tyres do you recommend (there seemd to be some polarised opinions on this)?
Do you think that there is any mileage in getting an additional set of genuine ‘wet’ racing tyres for real downpour days?
I will also be at Spa with LoT (18/03). Unfortunately, as I have no trailer yet, I’ll be driving the Exige, and taking a big chance on only having the ‘track’ tyres fitted. Although, I may consider sacrificing ultimate cornering ability, if I decide to get the road tyres sorted out before then.
Cheers,
Clive.
Hi Clive I’m going to be at SPA on the 18th, and will be driving there on some fresh 888’s
Full wets are great and you should talk to Martin Edwards about the time he had a go in Chris Pearson’s race car on full wets - he raves about how good they were.
The only draw back for me is that with 5 or 6 track days per year and typically at best (read worst ) 1 or 2 wet days a year then you don’t get to use them often enough before the get a bit on the old side.
I opted for a set of A039s - which do give better grip than 48s in the wet and if you don’t trailer your car can be put on if the day is going to be mixed weather wise and you get the improved wet weather grip plus don’t loose that much in the dry. They certainley won’t get trashed like a full wet will if run on a dry track.
Good compromise tyre, just soooooo bloody expensive !
Yep, as Con says, full race wets are incredible (I drove Chris’s car the same day as Martin, at Donington). However, they will be very short lived if used on a dry track, & are not road legal!
As above, they are pretty mental, but there’s a very small window between using them on a drying track and ruining them - a couple of fast laps in the dry will see you throwing them away.
Have a set in stock if someone is looking for the ultimate wet tyre set up.
Clive
Pete & I will be heading off on the Chunnel on the 16th so if you want anything taken in the van, (wheels etc) and we can sort out the logistic, let me know.
Con looks like I am following you again - glad to hear a positive comment on the 39s

OrangeD Good man Spa welcomes the brave, so Ive heard. Lets hope it does not rain.
Col Yes Ive heard the story from Martin Edwards driving Chris car, thats what got me thinking about getting some. I hear what youre saying re cost outlay for 1or 2 track days per year. However, with the cost of some track days escalating, and the fact that I might as well go home if the rain really comes down, to my mind they will effectively pay for themselves in a couple of years, and I would have had some fun. A039s sound good (I hear the expensive bit), but they are a compromise. Ideally I like the idea of a three tyre set up Ultimate (dry) track (Toyo R888s for me ), road and damp conditions (Toyo TR1s?), and wet / downpour track (full racing wets). Once the trailer turns up, I could swap these at will, and use the road tyres for long road trips.
Mr Pesky I aim to be careful and only use them (once the trailer turns up) on wet / downpour trackdays. It seems a good idea to have the option costs permitting.
JDS Proof and pudding time. So roughly how much would you be looking for the set you have? What are they, and will these fit an Exige S1?
Harvey Thank you so much for your kind offer, but I think that the logistics are going to be a bit too complex. Looks like Im with OrangeD.
Cheers for the comments all,
Clive.
Won’t the issue be with full wets on a trackday that you will be seriously quicker than everyone else?
I’ve been on quite a few full-on wet trackdays and (as well as leaving my window open ) have had a bit of fun and learned a lot trying to find the grip on 48’s.
I couldn’t agree more Benja, I do love wet track days
Benja leaving his window open in the most torrential of torrential down pours was mildly amusing i seem to recall.
hahaha
cool, the wetter the better especially now I have no roof or screen
Fixed that for you marc!
They are Yokohama AD06’s, never been on rims, kept dry and made in 2008/9 from memory, so as new.
They are the same size and spec as used in the Autobytel/Motorsport series, and in my opinion beter than the Dunlop/Pirelli - hahahaha!! - option.
Slightly shorter sidewall and in 190/230 width - in reality, more like 225 on the rear.
Selling on ebay for 560 inc vat, but will be 530 inc vat on here. This is a saving over the new current trade price from Yokohama
And yes, you will be comically quicker than others on road tyres, let alone A048/888’s.
Let your friends know, and others not??
