S1 Exige Airbox Query

Hello,

Sorry for always asking questions, but I have another. I’ve been tinkering about with my car today and changing over its standard airbox for an original carbon one I’ve picked up, the bits I have are broadly the same as those shown here;

http://forum.nyloc.org/viewtopic.php?t=19098

The tube/pipe from the airbox that runs out to the LHS air-intake behind the cars door is identical. Which is to say its a little short and doesn’t have any attachment to fix it directly behind that intake on the inside of the engine bay. The one I removed was in effect just sitting there, not fixed just resident in the general area which potentially is good enough to get the air flow needed. But I’m pretty sure on my previous Elise it was physically connected.

A bit of googling for images and I found this old ebay listing which showed a longer pipe and a fitment to run to the intake

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/K-Series-VHPD-Air-Box-Filter-Hose-Lotus-Elise-Exige-Caterham-Rover-A111E0053K-/121693107042?nma=true&si=Ol8s2Ekc3CkFdexQsN6x7WpHiLY%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Is that the norm? I found this link looking at the part number for the pipe A111E6390F;

http://www.deroure.com/diagrams.asp?MAK=1&MDL=16&TBL=1678&SMA=0&SMO=28&ST=sill&SC=0

Which shows 2 filters in line ( I have a second so can fit another, but doesn’t show a connection to the intake.

Sorry for being dense, but I rather enjoyed a bit of gentle tinkering today :wink:

The plastic bit that fitted into the end of the pipe was a Elise Sport 190 part. Some very early Exiges had it, with a bit plain pipe, but later ones had the shorter pipe with the insulation. Seem to remember the change over was around the same point that AC was fitted.

The second filter was purely for noise suppression and not really needed, same as the flap thing. To be fair, unless you are going for total originality, the OE filter is a little pants and there are much better solutions out there.

Thanks for that. Should the pipe connect to the inside of the air scope inside the engine bay or resting near by is adequate? Cheers

My pipe just dangles (oo-er! :blush:) near the intake, although I’ve secured it to the roll bar with some velcro straps so it’s pointing a bit more in the right direction. Probably no bad thing as it means you get a bit more airflow into the engine bay as a whole rather than ducting straight into the airbox. I only have the one filter at the airbox end, too.

What are other people running for filters? I see there’s a K&N cone one available to replace the original ‘witch’s tit’ foam thing - any good?

That’s great thank you. I think I’ll similarly zip tie the pipe to keep it in the air-flow and stop worrying! :clap:

Everyday’s a school day. I have an original filter and it’s fitted the opposite way round as shown in that diagram. Sock pointing up stream. :open_mouth:

Best after market filter option?

Oh and keep asking the questions… great stuff. I’m jealous of the carbon airbox… :slight_smile:

Be careful fitting the air hose directly to the air intake.as it increases the chance of damage like this occuring.

ITG filter at carb end on mine + carbon air-box.Also inlet pipe connected to left side inlet.
