Looking to buy myself a Lotus, preferably of the Exige variety! I want to take the car on track as well as do some touring in europe and am currently deciding which model to get:
S2 Elise - Cheap one as a training horse on track
S1 Exige - Looks a damn sight lighter than a S2 - No Boot
S2 Exige - Like the look, but then there is the…
S2 Exige S - Drove and loved one at B&C in surrey, but a lot of money for a novice track goer (risk).
So its pretty obvious I want a S2 Exige S, just kinda feel I will look like a bit of a penis turning up to the track in one and then trundling around.
As far as track driving goes - book yourself on a few sessioned days (ie groups for difference experience levels) run by Lotus On Track or Bookatrack, book some instruction, & the job’s a gud un Don’t forget, everyone starts off as a novice, so there’s nowt to be frightened of
I do want it as a track car too, and I do have a battered VW track car to thrash but due to having [censored] all space living in London, the prised single garage would go to just one car.
If I were to go track only, then it would be a honda powered 340R. One step at a time though!
The S1 exige does have a boot and its not much smaller (if any) than the S2 Elise, etc.
I have had an S1 Exige and now have a honda’d s2 elise. They are both brilliant cars but you have to drive them and see which floats your boat the most. You cant really go wrong with any of the cars on your list, it comes down to money and test drives. There isnt much difference on track between all the cars you listed so dont worry about that too much, get tuition and drive like you stole it
I recently purchased a S1 Elise for a weekend/trackday car. It’s performance as a track day car is amazing (especially once the brakes and tyres have a little heat in them). With my sensible head on I’d suggest a cheap S1 Elise in the short term (so you don’t loose any sleep if you do ‘bin it’). Get a few track days under your belt, some lessons and a couple of spins then upgrade to an Exige (thats my plan). I recently drove the S2 Exige (S) at Silverstone and if I’m completly honest the car was far better than me. Because of this I’ve actually had more fun in my S1 Elise on a track. However, my time to upgrade can’t come soon enough! Therefore, with my less sensible head on go straight for the Exige (S)
Looking at 30-33k for a white or club racer. Maybe a 2005 240R as they look nicely specced.
Im not a total track novice, having done about 7-8 days mainly in a E39 M5 (the V8 one). However I’ve never really pushed the M5 in the corners like I would a lotus as the brakes went to mush.

Have you considered a converted car (audi or honda, etc) ? For that kind of money you could get a beast that would be noticably quicker than the other cars you mention ?
With hind-sight (wonderful thing!) I would have bought an S2-S. Spend so much time on road compared to track the extra torque would life much easier. But, if you want all-out hooligan all the time go for an S1 or S2 N/A
