Rough acceleration at low and high revs

Hi everyone.

My S1 bogs down/runs very rough accelerating between 1000rpm and 2500rpm, sounds almost like its on 3 cylinders. Above that it zings along like normal.

Also at high revs under hard acceleration the same problem occurs.

This is when both cold and warmed up.

I’ve put fresh super unleaded in, I’ve pulled the plug leads and reseated them.

Ideas?

Not getting enough outings?

Fuel gone off over winter. I have that problem with my lawnmower!

I think one of your spark plugs may have degraded ( it happens over time ) if your sure the leads are AOK , and the connections both ends are sound ( I would take them off and WD40 them at both ends) then it 's more than likely the spark plugs ( check gaps also) :frowning: Replace if required!!!

Corrosion on one or more of the pins on the coil?

I mixed good fuel with bad, having a similar…power, no power, power, no power in a rev drop sort of way. Took an age to get rid, but once the tank was dry and refilled it was sorted!

Well starting from relative principles, don’t we have fuel, mixture and combustion, followed by some drivetrain stuff.

Fuel and plugs have been mentioned, so what about injectors or manifold/gasket leaks?

Thanks for the pointers guys, I’ll put a new set of plugs in for the hell of it, any brand recommended ?

Although I put new Super Unleaded in it the tank wasn’t empty and there’s a good chance the fuel had gone off/had water in it… Shall get some of that Wynns dry fuel or whatever it’s called.

Someone suggested it could be the IACV, thoughts ?

On a slight thread drift how about approving some newbies while your car is sorted?

Thanks for the link, unfortunately they’re for non-VHPD + Honda engines.

Dave - I thought super made no difference to an original S1 and if that fuel has low turnover at your petrol station could actually be adding to a fuel issue.

If you have not run it for a while then just keep diluting with fresh fuel and I have found redex to be quite good to add to the tank to get rid of any carbon or varnish issues.

Does it idle OK - you could try pulling plugs one at a time to see what difference if any it makes and so identify a single plug/lead issue.

IACV sounds a dead end if issue is also at high revs but not in middle range. Do you have a catch tank fitted - if you do the likihood is the IAVC will be perfectly clean and so less likely to be an issue.

Take plugs out and check condition before replacing. Check gaps also. If you dont know good condition from bad just look for consistency across all four.

Have you tried accelerating slowly - as if its just a hard acceleration issue both at low and high revs then I’d be ruling above items out and then looking at fuel supply.

Heard issues of fuel supply pipe weakening over time and then when high demand required, pipe collapses internally limiting fuel until accelerator pedal lifted and then relatively normal running resumes.

Hi Steve thanks for taking time to respond.

At the weekend I put some Wynn’s Dry Fuel in, in case there had been some water in it over winter, and also changed the spark plugs… after that it ran perfectly… I thought I’d fixed it.

However, 2 hours later I jumped in the car again and it was back to it’s old bad self.

It’s hard to know how the idle is, as I have no reference point, but it’s a relatively steady idle, its not all over the place.

On my 2nd trip I had to return to base after only a mile or two for fear of being stranded, it just didn’t want to accelerate at even light throttle. Blipping the throttle from idle isn’t smooth, it sounds “fluffy/blowy/spluttery” if that makes sense.

Would bad fuel be “sometimes it works fine, sometimes it doesn’t” ?.

I did the 5-pedal-push IACV reset trick to no avail.

No catch tank is fitted.

Here’s a pic of the old/new plugs… not that it’s fixed the problem…

I have had it where when you first start up its horrid, take for a run gets better, leave for a bit and its horrid again. Turned out the fuel had been contaminated/gone off and driving it mixed it all up. As soon as it was not running for any length of time it would settle into layers, so that the pick up was only picking up the crud at the bottom of the tank until it was mixed again. Only solution was to drain, change filter, flush and fil to top with fresh fuel.

Thanks for that… Hmm… how do I drain it ? I’ve got enough Jerry cans to hold the old fuel.

To save scrabbling about ,this is a good option IMHO

Yup, thats what I would do
Once empty as you can get it I think I would put about 4 or 5 litres back in and syphon those out too, then use it in my lawn mower ect.

4 or 5 litres of good fuel I mean

hehe, yep, that’s what I’d planned for it. I shall get syphoning.

Jack up the left side, as the bottom of the tank isn’t flat to avoid fuel starvation.
