Rolling Road Stresses

Now that we’ve agreed to move on from the AFR bun fight and talk about dyno’s does anyone have any experience/data on the stresses placed on a car while on a dyno.

Only mention as there’s a post on Seloc about a recent blowup on a RR.

Also talk of 15sec pulls on rolling road sound horrendous :astonished:
Strapping a car down and running full power runs worries me a touch. Is this why when Boothy and co did their dyno runs they only did 5sec pulls ?

What’s the general view ???

Most pulls are done in 4th and 5th to the limiter…so you can imagine what type of stress they are in without decent air flow and cooling…IMHO it all comes down to experience and there will always be a few exceptions which blow

Chris are you poking the bear Intentionally I think it wants to sleep

It’s spring - no hibernation allowed !!!

Go on Chris … I Soooo wanna see a factory 260 on a 15 second pull at 140 mph with only 15mph airflow …
Just put a thick mat on the floor so the tester can’t get full throttle and at least you’ll stay rich … :astonished:

Your worrying far too much, as long as the cars not running dangerously hot and has its fluid corectly topped up.

A power run is nothing compared to some spirited drives and certainly track driving. On a track day your 95% either hard on the brakes, or hard accelerating. At Snetterton, the long straight before the esses you will have WOT up to around 130mph - and this is lap after lap!

You’ve also got to remember that a 15sec power run is done all in one gear (usually 4th), only the last couiple of seconds is at the redline. Majority of the 15 seconds the car will only be labouring at less than 6k rpm…exactly what you would do in the real world on the motorway.

Setting aside the debate of custom mapping…

I too would be very nervous of using a RR for any length of time. It probably stresses an engine waaaay more than any real world situation, including hooning around your favourite track all day. Just watching & listening to a car on a RR gives me the shivers.

I know some forums hold RR days, they must be nuts, loaded, or have a racing programme

Not for the feint hearted :astonished:

I was concerned about this before giving my car to Randy for some RR R+D looking at different primaries. He reassured me by saying my car would do about 8 pulls and his race car had already done a few hundred pulls.
Now I know a bit more about it, I doesn’t bother me at all. TDI , where I went, have fans giving airflow equivalent to 130mph. If you want to test an air/air I/C’d car you need airflow or you may as well not bother. If they’ve got a desk fan at the end of the bay you’ll get one pull if you’re lucky before you start retarding.

Hence us 3 clowns taking along the leaf blower to stick up the roof scoop !

Bloody manual said it blew air at 120 mph

It may well of done, the problem is it blew hot air at 120mph

Next time I am taking this!

Plumbing tools are the answer to everything  lets see it heatsoke after a dose of liquid nitrogen

The mark 2 prototype has a liquid nitrogen injection port built in !!!

Think Terminator 2 … when the 'liquid poly alloy" cop snapped his leg off …
