The Vitus is still full of life but hanging up in the garage awaiting true spring weather and dry roads.
In the mean time, I have bought another machine to take the place of my much-loved and well travelled Ribble 653 ( bought circa 1994?)
It’s an ORRO STC Tailormade with Ultegra Di2, hydraulic disc brakes. Fitted with mudguards as it will be an all year round bike, except in summer when I will be out on my Cervelo R3.
Test ride today went well, electric gearing pretty much faultless.
I chose black and gold in a desperate attempt to match JPS colours. The alternative was cherry red metallic with gold which looked fabulous but I felt was a bit “flash ”
I love the layered carbon showing through in certain areas.

They are great bikes and superb value, I think they call them “open frame”, which means 2-3 years ago they were labelled with a mega brand name at 5-7k for the frame. I’m working with one of Ribble’s riders, Dan Bigham, on some stuff. Take a look on Vimeo, Huub Wattbike, going for gold. We used the video in a lecture this week and he got pretty emotional. A little private team from Derby (Derbados) beating team GB on track.

I thought you had bought a Ribble. I havre not purchased a new road bike for 15 years, any gains will be lost to my age!

I looked at Ribble but they were on long delivery times. I very much enjoyed watching the Vimeo clip. I knew the name Dan Bigham and checked out his blog on the Ribble website. Sounds a fascinating bloke.

I try to help him with some of the engineering but to be honest I have brought in someone much smarter than me on aerodynamics. Fast cycling is all about being aero. When your body reaches its max power you can’t train much more in. Going faster takes a lot more power, 100 times the kinetic energy for 10mph than 1mph so you have to be very aero, even the laces on the shoes make a difference. His team was going for the world championship team pursuit but the UCI banned trade teams so they disbanded. I promised the team a day at Dony in my Caterham if they got the WR.

I know him as we both ride at the Derby velodrome and he and the team are locally famous as Derby took them under its wing. That’s why he rides for the “People’s republic of Derbados”. He’s a really nice and determined guy, I just try to offer him a bit of support.
