Just replaced the standard door mirrors (old Metro ones) with some light weight carbon fibre ones. I know they will not to be to everyones taste, but might be of interest to other people.
Anyway, off came the old ones and weighed on the wife’s food scales:
772g
For comparison, the SPA Carbon Fibre Saloon mirrors only weigh 136g.
Thats a total weight saving of 1.272Kg (636g EACH). There is truly nothing to them when you pick them up.
Here’s what they look like on the car:
I have not been out in it yet, so don’t know how they compare on the road/track. Probably wont get out in it till Croft on the 20th July.
They retail for about 120 each, but I got the pair for 120 on eBay. I had been on the look out for awhile as they don’t come up very often. Seen a couple of pairs in about a year for a responsible price.
There are two holes visible that will need to be sorted. I also had to drill an extra hole in each side as the mount is smaller. I did think of getting an alloy block machined that would mount to the door using existing holes and the cf mirror mounting to the block.
Didn’t think about it too long as it would have added weight and cost a fortune (even though I could do all the 3D CAD modelling myself and get it cnc’d).
Here’s a photo showing the 2 holes from the old mount:
They look really good, Ive been thinking of a set of these for a while but was debating getting custom brackets made never thought you could just bolt them on to the existing mount, like Muu asked do you have an exposed hole now then?
Yeah, dead easy. I use one of the original holes and marked where I needed the second hole. Drill 5mm hole, then mount with 2 nuts and bolts. Not difficult, but might not be to everyone’s taste due to drilling and exposed fixings visible when openning the door.
My car is far from standard, so it doesn’t bother me. If anyone is at Croft with LoT, come over and take a look.
No Mark, not a all. I only have the centre tunnel and extinguisher to replace and the interior is done. My intake will finally be here (not that it was an issue as DD Performance have been great) so onward with the engine out and carbon rear clam on after Spa.
If you need a little carbon vinyl either of you I have some spare that would cover both those areas easily on your cars and then you could pop one (or two) of those Moss Plastic caps in. You can just have it no probs, PM your address and I’ll pop in in the post.
Sounds good Jonny look forward to the finished pics.
Thanks for the offer too but im ok for carbon wrap due to using it lots in the past so have a bit left, remember I went on an overdose of the stuff at one point covering my roof lol.
