Remove passenger seat...

All,

Please advise on best method and any specific tools I need before attempting to remove my passenger seat…much appreciated.

…BTW…if any of you are having window trouble, please consult me…I’ve now had to re-do both sides after they have fallen through the door, having popped their plastic grabbers.

Cheers

Hi Carttman,

I find it best to use the allen key socket attachments for the 2 rear screws, attached to a long extension with some electrical tape wrapped around the end so the screw doesn’t fall away when you pull it out.

You will have to pull away the plastic cover between the handbrake tunnel and the rear speaker cover section to gain access to the one rear bolt. Other than that it’s pretty simple with a ratchet, be careful not to scratch the dash or sill when removeing the seat as the rails leave nasty marks.

Other than that it’s pretty simple, have not done one with 3 point belts in a while, so you might have to loosen the 3 point to get the seat out completely, I can’t remember.

i totallly agree with Jason on the method (also on the damage the rails can do to the bare ali in the cabin so take care getting the seat out (and in) thru the letterbox door opening.

I have to redo my Drivers window… how did you remove all th eoriginal glue/epoxy from the windo glass before fitting new ‘plastic grabbers’ ? I guess you bought new plastic grabbers from a dealer ?

RoxTeddy,

Sure, Let me run through what I did.

  1. Remove window winders, alcantara studs to gain access to the mechanism.
  2. Remove nuts from three grabbers and slowly lift window out, gently prying the window rubbers apart to let the grabbers through, ensuring the bolt section to the grabber doesn’t catch and damage the rubber. (Note: The nut hearest the door hinge is very hard to access…there is a drill hole in the door which should have a little black tape covering…put there for pricisely the purpose of removing the window!)
  3. Remove the “roller-bar” that the grabbers attach to as this will allow you to get an exact fit when re-glueing the grabbers. This should be easily extracted by rolling in direction of the door lock, and then once out of the roller guides, just ease through the main access hole that the alcantera covers.
  4. Window preparation - I then took a small hammer and chisel (also effective using a medium size screw driver), and I hammer away at the epoxy - and it just chips off…I know what you all must be thinking…but no broken windows yet!! Obviously as you chip close to the edge a bit of care should be taken.
  5. I then take a coarse sand paper and sand the area where the new glue will go, (to make good grip) and once the glass is nice and hazy with scratches, I clean it and the glass is ready.
  6. The grabbers you can re-order from the agent…I took the harder option and took a stanley knife and slowly dug away and cleaned them. Your choice really, but the grabbers are certainly re-usable. Once they are as clean as you can get them, rinse them and let them dry.
  7. Before preparing the glue, place the three grabbers back on the roller bar and secure nuts. (NB Use the window as a guide to ensure the grabbers are all aligned)
  8. Gluing - Use Araldite epoxy. Comes in twin tubes. That or equivalent is the best glue for the task.Mix it well and then apply it generously to both the grabbers and to the glass hazy areas, ON BOTH SIDES.
  9. Marry the grabbers to the glass, making sure the glass is resting in the “seats” of all three grabbers as far as it can go. Remember, the bar is on a roller so getting the grabbers onto the glass to the exact millimetre where they originally were is not required, however get as close as possible. Allow to dry.

Introducing the window back into the door:

  1. Remove the roller bar from the grabbers once grabbers have bonded to the glass.
  2. Place the roller bar back into the door into its roller guides.
  3. Introduce the window by easing the front lower edge of the window via the rubber nearest the back (handle-side) of the door (the space is slightly larger there and provides better clearance for the grabbers). Once the first grabber is through, reposition the window until the middle grabber can be easeed through the same spot nearest the back top of the door, and then finally ease the last grabber through the rubber at that same spot again. Dont try and hold the window above the door and force the grabbers through the rubber at three places as this is harder and can damage the rubber.
  4. NB!! Be sure to correctly place the window into the lined runner that runs down the back (handle side)of the door.
  5. Position grabbers next to roller bar and marry bolts to holes and secure nuts. Replace alcantera, re-glue plastic sheet if necessary, and secure winder.

Done!
