Have partial loss of the top layer (tint) from the polycarbonate cover.
Realise that replacements are extremely hard to find, but would be happy to purchase one … has anyone ever had the polycarbonate recoated?
Its actually a three piece laminate construction, with the tint being in the sandwich layer.
I can understand the blackoff being the middle layer…
But there appears to be a film/tint on the top surface, which is in my case partially removed, showing a clear polycarbonate below … Happy to forward an image
At a guess it will be a UV coating, similar to that on headlights. Over time the coating can start to break down.
You can buy UV coating sprays, but I’ve never used one, that are supply to restore the surface.
I need to do this during at some point.
Thanks for feedback gents.
Read that there is a coating either side of the polycarbonate, outside obviously all over, inner looks like it runs to edge of blackoff.
Two different approaches as I see it.
Find a company or a guide on how to remove existing outer coating, plus application of new coating. They need to handle complete assembly.
Or find a new polycarbonate, which would then entail removal of old polycarbonate from the carrier below and rebonding.
Neither that simple…
Phil has them for sale in the parts section. Only three left.
Thanks!!
Don’t forget Impact paintshop (and much more) in Bury, Lancs (0161 764 5421) They worked wonders on Jabbs polycarbonate engine cover (I don’t think he’d mind me sharing that). And did a great job on sorting the panel gaps on mine.
Might be worth a call to seek advice even if they are miles away from you.
Thommo I asked Mike at impact, whilst my Elise was in for a respray, if he could assist with bonding my new cover but he was not able to assist unfortunately.
Oh, surprising, but I thought they’d have a bash at owt.
Thanks Thommo… popped the car along to Finishlineukltd yesterday (based near Stevenage) who will have a go at respraying the polycarbonate.
Hadn’t realised the tint was originally sprayed on.
Left them the part, had surprisingly good rear view visibility on the way back too!!
Hope all goes well
For information the original polycarb coating was applied by Peerless Coatings - I spoke to the fella there:

Good sleuthing, Simon
Received the resprayed engine cover and have refitted… looks like new, fantastic!!
Boys at Finishlineukltd did a great job.
Did require removal of remainder of tint prior to any new application to avoid any read through.
Appreciate your feedback including the details of Peerless coatings which was my next port of call.
Andy
Well worth knowing about finishline. Glad it all worked out
