Redline oils?

Many years ago, (maybe 15-20!) I imported enough Redline oil to do a complete engine and gearbox oil change on my wife MX-5. I remember the oil being highly rated amongst MX owners and, at the time, it seemed to make the whole car ‘better’ to the extent that the local Mazda dealer even commented.

Was/is this just rose tinted memories or has anyone used this stuff in an Exige?

I use it in mine. 15W50

I use the gearbox oil, and think it’s great.

Did it make a noticeable difference? Mine seems to not like changing down to third at high speed.

I use there regular 75/90 and yeah I think it is good. They do a heavier oil that isn’t supposed to be as good for our kinds of gearboxes.

I think part of the issue is that any fully synthetic aftermarket oil is going to make your gearbox feel a lot better, regardless of brand.

I tend to not like seeing posts where someone “thinks” an oil is good - because it’s rarely based on proof, only gut feel or the shiny label on the can (no offence to anyone on this thread)

And because none of us run a particular oil for a long period of time, then strip down the gearbox for inspection, and compare it’s performance to another oil - it becomes a bit of a non argument!

So given that, what you do is buy the best stuff out there - in terms of approvals and or proven track record.

I have always used Motul on all my cars, and that was based on some engine strip downs from a guy on a forum, and that Subaru rally team are using it

I also advocate Castrol oils as I know a little about the testing they do.

My main advice is to choose a named brand, and the correct viscosity - these are the most important factors.

PS - I deal with lube oils on a daily basis (gas turbines) but not claiming to be any sort of expert.

Point taken Mark. I suspect anything would improve it based on it not being changed in 4 years.

Looks like they know what they are doing. http://www.redlineoil.com/

No offence taken, but I have used several different brands of gear and engine oil over the years, and Redline gear oil gives the best gearchange quality when hot of any oil I have tried. A lot of other house hold names start to bulk on down changes on a synchro box when very hot (in my experiance anyway). Also when I ran my dog box, it showed the lowest amount of dog ring wear than any other oil I tried. And yes I have stripped and rebuilt all of my gearboxes. My Quaife box came apart on average after every three events. I have had my audi box apart three times so far and all is well. My synchro oil experiance came back in my Escort Cosworth days I went through a number of gearboxes over the 6 years I had that car and a number of different oils, with Redline coming up the best in my opinion.

Sean, that is the kind of good proof i’m on about. If you’ve made direct comparissons and also done some strip down, then it’s a much fairer test.

I’m with you Mark, I see so many people that just follow and regurgitate what they read on the internet with no firm proof. I have come to the point that if I haven’t seen it with my own eyes, I reserve judgement until I have. I don’t normally even comment on things unless I have first hand experiance.

According to SpecialK, your preparation is (& always was) crap. Who is correct?

PS Really looking forward to seeing you, Burt & gang next weekend.

3 Litres of Redline and a filter from Opie for 38. Bit of a deal!
