Rear Number plate

I have bought new plates for my car but i can’t seem to get the rear one off?? It has no screw fixings so must be stuck on bit have reallt given it some force but it wont budge! to you know how to remove the plate/cover(dark tectured grey thing) that the plates sits on see pic.

The balck plastic mount directly behind the plate is bolted through the clam shell, with one big nut and bolt in the middle. Unfortunatly you will need a socket on both sides, so the plate will need to come off. The plate itself must be stuck to the backing, so get in there with something like a thin wallpaper scraper or at least a broad screwdriver and try and prise your old numberplate off.

Thanks Sean, I will give it another go.

But hey at least I have got the photos sorted!

LOL, yeah man I was thinking that.

With the plate, if your not bothered about the old ones, just be brutal. Make sure you are holding the backing plate firm then just yank the plate.

It’s normally held by dual-sided foam tape, so prying a knife in between the plate and the backing plate will normally do.

totally agree with Sean and Uldis (of course)

it must be stuck on with plenty double sided tape, so a wallpaper scraper or similar would be best, howeer if its really stuck fast then there is a chance you will break the black plastic mounting — maybe a heat gun or hairdryer would help ?

Well been out in the garage and the buger still isn’t off. Cut my poor little finger aswell . A heat gun in the morning hopefully should get it off. I will be putting the double sided velcro stuff on my new ones like.

my S2 ones have been stuck on with the double sided foam tape and its awful! my back one totally fell off the other day while i was driving along so i have glued it on. and the front one, one end has pretty much been unstuck from day one.

Nath, if you end up braking the black palstic bit, I still have mine ( i think, 99.9% sure i still have it) and you can have it. I aint gonna be using it now anyway.

Just out of interest, what is the matter with the number plates that are on it???

LOL prolly smashed in a thousand pieces by now… especially after twanging yer knuckles with it in this weather

BTW… from the pic above it looks like its stuck on with at least 6 or 7 vertical pieces of sticky foam stuff

Nice one sean, just encase i stuff it up . The seal has gone on the plates, so water has got behind and they are just in need of a refresh to be honest.

No worries, let me know if you bust it. I will let you know 100% if i have the rear suround tomorrow.

If Sean hasnt got one - I defo have one so dont worry anymore about breaking it

Nylon fishing line will usually cut through Foam pads just like a cheese cutter…
But dont slice your fingers as well
Good luck.

excellent tip Mr Bean

Since I am a fly fisherman, i should have thought of that-but didn’t Any way after cutting my hands and trying a hair dryer no luck, was getting fed up and moaned to the bird! her reply was “give me a go” So as i was watching she didn’t damage the body work, she got her little mits behind and pulled the buger stright off! and she didn’t even brake the rear plate! She will still never get near the drivers seat, but thanks for that pet!
