Ramblings relating to my car

So after a weekend of dismal racing, new motor new suspension, new slicks and zero practice or qualifying equals start at the back of the grid.

Anyway lots of slower traffic and a car I am not used to results in a 1st lap spin, but even with the traffic I manage a 1m11.2 s lap time, which is about 1.5s up on my previous best, an overfull breather bottle results in being pulled off for smoking on the last lap.

Race 2 starts witha a huge accident which involving 4 cars on the start line and a red flag. Now I knew that I had 2 standing starts in the std driveshafts but now there were 3. res start is good and just settling into a rythym when on lap 2 the left hand side driveshaft pops out, lost drive and suspected it had broken again, but turns out it had only popped out. This really is becoming a nuisance.

So all in all a good and bad weekend, the car is superb I was just completely caught out by the amount of speed the car now carried, where I would normally be between 3rd and 4th on most of the track I was now between 4th and 5th most of the time. Beauty of the 2l is it doeas not need to be murdered, shifting at anything between 7.5 and 8k is all it needs to just continue accelarating.

Decide to have a look at the cambelt tension yesterday, just one of those nagging thoughts, seems a bit loose so I think i’ll tighten, which I do, run motor for a few seconds, go to feel belt on it’s longest run and what do i discover, a huge hole. This really is one of the luckiest routine maintenance finds I have had so far.

Have 2 piper cambelts in the cupboard but not another motor, so today it’s cambelt replacement day in hope of a better performance in Sundays Porsche challenge race.

I will continue to use this post as a rambling on of my experiences.

Lucky find Jason!
How is it that your driveshaft keeps poping out? I thought the shafts were literaly pinned between the trans and the hub carrier with not enough wiggle room for the spline to actually come out.
I’m tearing down my VHPD this winter to do some head porting and bottom end balancing. Is there some place that is easy to deal with to source parts like rings, bearing, piston liners?

Mike

Hi Mike,

To be honest I never felt comfortable with the std rover belt fitted to the car nad was not sure why it had not been upgraded to a piper version but anyway.

I can only reccomend companies that I have dealt with personally, being in SA it is diffcult I can’t just go to the local dealer and get some parts so it is all international shipping. I have only the best things to say about eliseparts, they have sent me rings and many other bits for the motor which were not there normal stock items in the past along with the rest of my order. I have also dealt with Scholar and they to are very very helpful and have always been keen to give advice and helpful tips. I am sure there are many other people you could deal with but this has been my experience, I have a block on the way back to scholar now for a cracked liner repair, the origonal block from the car, so many many hours of use. To me the relationship and ability to give advice is far more important than price.
