Hello, just dropped my other car into Renault with its R888s for a service and the guy says that my tyres are now illegal ? The set that I have on are ok and legal but when they are used I will have to buy another type ? Is this right, I know they were trying to ban them but has it actually happened now ?
Cheers.
If it’s above 1.6mm depth across the centre 75% (some say with visable tread across the whole tyre) then my understanding is that the tyre would be legal to use (i.e. would pass an MOT).
I don’t believe if it’s been sold it will ever be illegal. Should they change the law I would expect the legislation will impact the supply.

I can’t remember the details but there was some talk a while back about the EU outlawing certain tyres. Many people jumped the gun and took it as 100% certain this would include 888s and 048s which as far as I’ve been told it doesn’t.
Weirdly Pesky thats exactly what I said to him but he insisted … so I posted here. Just checking he was talking sh?te :O)
Thanks chaps.
it is true and you can not even have them on a car anymore
so to help out those who have some i will give you 1 per set
but only full sets

They’re DOT approved and if above the minimum tread he should wind his neck in and keep it in his head rather than trying to sound clever and looking a complete fool.
Had a similar discussion myself with an MOT tester who (in defeat) then claimed my brakes were “illegal” as I was not using OEM pads!
My understanding is that all tyres will have to have ratings for various things, but must meet a miniumum standard to be sold. I think the second part has been dropped and now they will just have to show the graphs from 2012.
I think the ratings are to be for
resistence to aquaplaning
noise levels
rolling resistance
edit just found this on evo website

What about very, very, very… worn ones, ie. those that look like slicks?
