I had a good look at the quaife seqential gearbox at the Autosprt show today and it looks reaaly very very good.
However its not expensive as dog boxes go (4095+vat)
So im trying to determine if they are inexpensive or just shite.
Who has experience of these and what are your findings please??
Please non of this you need a toyota 5 speed E153 etc etc
I am only interested in the quality and longetivity of the Quaife box, or not if that is the case
I seem to remember reading some negative comments on Lotus Talk. Sorry I don’t have the link, I suggest you delve.
It’s a shame as they are a respected manufacturer.
No good for driving to the track
IIRC Sean ditched his, & Evosal had a few problems with the one fitted to his former ex Gv Kershaw race car. However, they may have a different driving style to you Dave - they are bloody animals!
Like John said on the phone today mate, they are simply shite! From what we know all of the toyotas engined cars that fitted them in the LOT series have removed them due to faults and failures.
my K series box was a nightmare with failure after failure. The repairs were ALWAYS expensive and they didn’t stock many spare parts.
Their ATB diffs are good, but I would never buy another Quaife gearbox or gearkit again.
I thought Sean had aPG1 Quaife gear box??
Sean you there??
They may be animals but rubbish kit is rubbish kit, I have only heard bad things but its alway rumours not factual and this is what Im trying to deterime before I stock any thing!!!
If your on about the new one they have developed for the 2zz then don’t bother. As Sean has said the boys who’ve had them installed in theIr 2-11’s have had nothing but trouble. If you want the finer details of the faults speak to Anthony at Datum Motorsport in Weston as they have 1st hand knowledge of running them.
Hmmm
Thanks Sean and Gav, always nice when you guys chip in.
As you will both know I have the Hewland kit and dont want to waste precious time and money if a much cheaper good solution where to become available.
Looks like the development needs to continue.
I need a good strong box for when my new ECU arrives
Sean give John a poke mate please. LOL
JS you there? where is my finished mapped ECU
To be fair though Dave, if you stopped calling him up and chatting to him on the phone all bloody day, he would get more done. hahaha [/quote]
Got lip out now, just told off by Sean.

Dave sure can talk
I’ve installed one of these Quaife boxes in my Lotus … I’ve heard good and bad, probably more bad than good. I haven’t done a test day yet as I’m waiting for Quaife to send me a shift cable (wasn’t included in my original order). It took just over 5 months to receive my unit (California) as Quaife were waiting for new cases to arrive (assume they are out sourced).
My hope was this unit would survive a season with the Lotus Cup USA folks. I’m not making huge TQ numbers 188 ft/lbs tops.
Any chance you folks could share what you know about the failures – as much detail as you can possibly remember would be much appreciated.
And if you know who makes the gears (assume they are outsourced also) … trying to determine gear material and carbon content.
I know of two failures and one success state side, one failure happened 1st time at the track. Quaife’s response to the failure was disappointing, claiming it was “Driver error” without even seeing the box or seeing how the driver was shifting.
A couple of the units appeared to have Reverse Lockout tolerance issues where modifications were made to the pin … I don’t appear to have those issues (took careful measurement and tested). The reverse lockout pin mechanism is pretty simple, so the only conclusion I can could come up with is either a case tolerance problem or tolerance problem with the cam drum.

Simon Deacon ran one in Lotus Cup UK (Car 39) - consistent driveshaft issues, consistent clutch issues, cable routing issues. A lot of time, lot of money, lot of DNF’s. Gearbox no longer in the car…
Tom Chatterway ran on in Lotus Cup UK (Car 60) - didn’t last long and he went back to a Jubu geared box I think. Tom’s language when describing the Quaiffe wasn’t pleasant.
