Prof Sid Watkins on BBC R4

Just listened to Last Word on BBC R 4 ( via iPlayer) brief but apt tribute to the great man. sounds like he was a hell of a character.Well worth a listen.

I read one of his books years ago that became one of my favourites - Life at the Limit.

If you like F1 I’d really recommend it as Sid shares his personal insight in to the characters of some of the all time great drivers. What makes it so compelling is that the drivers trusted him so he got to see the real them, not the ones they want the media to see

It’s certainly not an inappropriate expose and he seems to understand we all want to know how they drove in the real world; I shalln’t spoil the stories of Giles!

The book isn’t actually that long as the back third is a lot of appendix data.

He followed it with another call Beyond the Limit which wasn’t as good but a nice addition.

I will never understand how he wasn’t knighted and was an ambition of mine to meet him.

Ian

Blime his stature has rather put the price up!

A couple of good tributes, both from people that understood him well:

I was fortunate to have met him once. He came and gave a talk to us in Eastbourne, which was outstanding.
He had dinner after the evening meeting and it was late when he got to the station to get back to London. He decided to get a taxi and most of the drivers are expecting to take a drunk from the last train back to home locally.
I can’t recall his address but he said something like “Marlebone ,please”
The driver looked him up and down and was generally non-plussed.
