Power loss at airfield trackday

Showery day at Hullavington MSE Trackday. My exige running fine at start but gradually losing power through the day. By afternoon it would not rev above 7000 in higher gears, getting worse all the time so decided to leave early. Worried about what was the cause was and how to get it fixed before Exige day at Anglesey, next Saturday.
Car was covered in dirt, wheels thick with runway crud. The airfilter, foam filter on carbon tube intake in side airscoop (don’t know make), had recently been cleaned but decided to look at it. Washed out all rubbish on filter car transformed power restored.
The speed with which the filter was blocked by the filth from the wet airfield track was a surprise. Maybe reposition the foam end away from being directly in line of fire from spray from front wheel, but still want to benefit from cooler air rather than draw from engine bay, any ideas?

Glad you got it fixed Dave!

Yep… better move the CAI… as snow will block it really quickly!

I think?? that a lot of peeps are actually using the ROOF scoop as the CAI with a few mods. I think JFK did this last year… and someonelese actually modded the scoop for better intake flow.

Have a look at the search function on here…

Glad you got it (sort of) fixed.

Will probably be a pipercross air filter.
Have you still got the ‘snorkel’ fitted? I bit of cardboard that looks like a snail in the right of this pic:

If you have managed to wedge this in as well it can pick up all the sh*t from the roads (only added to reduce noise).

I wouldn’t worry about it too much, not heard of it happening before, probably a one off.
I think pete’s getting confused with people modifying the roof scoop to give better airflow to the intercooler on s/c cars.

Sorry!!!

Yes I was!

Dont have these worries with my ‘K’!

No snorkel but the carbon tube bends forward and foam filter is very close to side scoop opening.
Not too worried for circuit/road use but was surprised by amount of dirt coming from runways, my rear wheels (clean at start) had about 4mm build up of grey mud on inside of rims.

Good to hear you got the problem fixed Dave, could have been an expensive one! I’m using an ITG Maxogen filter which doesn’t have a snorkel so I didn’t suffer in the same way but it still picks up a hell of a lot of dirt. Regular cleaning I suppose is the only real answer.

I jet washed my wheels twice afterwards and they still have a layer of grit attached. Although, that matches the half tonne of grass and mud in the undertray which has since developed a very noticeable rattle! Most people disappeared shortly after you which left me and one other lotus on track for the last half hour which was a bonus. Colerne was very busy the next day, few Lotus.

Would you mind sending me details of the guy we talked about, my rears are shot after 3 days!

See you at Hullavington next time.

Dave, with the pipercross where it rests in the car there is a vertical ridge of bodywork nearby towards the rear of the car. There is a little bit of adjustment to the angle it can be fitted and depending how you do it can rub a hole in the side of your filter. I’d suggest keeping an eye on it or some sacrificial layers of tape on the bodywork to take the edge off.
Tony, have any of your diffuser bolts fallen off?

After reading this i have just turned my K&N intake in away from the side grill ready for a wet day at Anglesey.

Yep, 3 missing and one left on a few threads! Really surprised as I tightened them only the day before, obviously not enough or I should check throughout the day. Better double check the rest more thoroughly before Hullavington on the 30th.
