Post Donington 31/10/2001

Many thanks Jimbo for the video footage. The car was fantastic on the slicks although they are not in great condition (a bit old & cracked on the walls). I’m sorry you were not able to keep up James but preety sure you would have had a good go, if you had faster equipment. Pesky what’s all this single seater stuff your talking about, it’s great to hear you have the BUG. What a difference a day makes. (is this a song)

B]TrevI’m sure that all of us who’ve never driven a single seater fancy a go once in their life. I’m not talking about racing, just having a drive in one! To be honest hadn’t considered it as a realistic possibility (save going on a Jim Russell/ARDS course)until yesterday, when it became apparant that you can hire one on a session by session basis. As for having the bug (jokes apart, folks!), I’ve had it since I was about 11 years old & saw Jim Clark racing a MK1 Lotus Cortina (often on 2 wheels) at Oulton Park. I’ve been attending trackdays for about 5 years now as a spectator/passenger, but it was only this year upon getting the Exige(& having a “certain” birthday), that I decided to get off my rse & actually do a few laps behind the wheel whilst I can still physically manage it [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/grin.gif[/image] I just hope that by the time I’m as old as you, I’m nearly as quick around Donny as you are [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/wink.gif[/image]Thanks again to you, David, & Lord Whitter for taking me out in your cars …most enjoyable, informative, & helpful [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/grin.gif[/image]Pass me the hot water bottle & Horlicks, nurse, I’m off to bed [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/wink.gif[/image] [This message has been edited by Pesky (edited 02 November 2001).]

Jimbo,No your are right - none as good as that!If you haven’t downloaded it do it now.jamesm

Yup, it was me, and I was sharing the car with one other, who also lurks around this board from time to time.I hired it from a chap called Richard Ellingworth (www.racecarhire.co.uk) - look for a write-up on Pistonheads before too long.Cheers,AdrianR

quote:Originally posted by trevor:The car was fantastic on the slicks Trevor,Thanks for the ride, I’m not sure it was just the slicks, you have to have the balls to use them [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/wink.gif[/image] , experiencing 120 at the exit of cranners was a rush. So much in fact that just passenging with you helped me safely find another 5-10mph there myself… well for the most part safely… [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/grin.gif[/image]I kept pressing harder and found I could get 110 indicated on the approach to the Old Hairpin… encouraged a couple of Laps latter I felt I could even push a little Harder good exit speed at Redgate… flat on the approach to Cranners latest possible shift to 4th and flat into Cranners, sure enough I had 107 (GPS ) at the turn-in so was in good place to accelerate through the exit and woooooo, yep thats it thats the limit OK… a big…big slide how I did’nt spin I’ll never know I felt the momentum carring the rear further and further arround and just managed to catch it, in fact I only lost about 20mph on my normal approach speed into the Old Hairpin, X111GED Junior was mightly impressed.I did get the chance to follow you a little latter in the day and noted how much more speed you had at the exit of Redgate, I still feel I’m understeer limited on the speed through Redgate, time to dial that understeer out I think.Julia, Pippa. Sorry you found things a bit intimadating, I gave the Porches a wide birth myself.James, I would be very interted in any Video you got of the day, I noticed one surprisingly fast Elise out there I suspect it may have been you, I did not get the chance to track you down…but theres always another day …Reg, Glad you enjoyed the day, I agree with your advice to Ian.Another thing I don’t know if BHL Leisure still offer driving tuition, I found them quite usefull after you have done one of there “punter” race experince days, you can get Personnal Instruction (PI) timed sesions that will give you some good pointers, As good as Dave Minter was in giving instruction, I found that not being able to hear much of the on circuit advice limited what you can get out of it.So question is who is up for the Brands GP Circuit on the 19th Nov?

Sadly the owner was against me doing a few laps of the paddock to get the hang of it. Apologies to anyone I got in the way of. (If it was in the afternoon then it MUST have been Adrian.)You can see me pushing the envelope on Jimbo’s site: jimbocam.com (Cheers Jim!)Watch closely just before the Dunlop bridge - blink and you’ve missed me.

Roy.I’m pleased you enjoyed the run round Donnington I gave you & it’s good that you found extra speed without a big off.I have also struggled with too much understeer, but going softer on the roll bar and adding some neg camber as made mine much neutral.Try it you might like it.

Hi folks! Sorry for the tardy response - been away / busy / dismantling PC (again!). IAC, thanks to everyone for making the occasion well worthwhile. Great time Tuesday night (nice to see both familiar and new faces), and thanks to the kind person (you know who you are) for supplying the condom but no means of using it! [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/grin.gif[/image] Wednesday was great, nice to be able to sample Donny in the dry, although I must play with my set-up so that I can give it more stick next time! Many many thanks to David and Trevor for the passenger rides; both very enjoyable and very illuminating albeit for different reasons. [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image] I think you have both ended up hurting my wallet! [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/grin.gif[/image]Shame about the Porches, IMO they were bang out of order, and hopefully Jonny will see to it that they’re not at the next meet. The RX7 was just as bad in the morning (he nearly hit me at one point as I was negotiating a slower car) but to be fair he played the game in the afternoon, even to the extent that he was behaving even when being held up badly. Anyway, great to see a couple of lady drivers behind the wheel (Julia & Pippa) [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image] - hopefully we’ll see you at more events albeit in novice sessions. IMO it was a real shame that a minority spoilt your first track day and that it wasn’t really representative of the normal track day behaviour / experience (IMO). IAC, I’m glad that you haven’t been put off completely. [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image]No, where’s my wallet… [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/grin.gif[/image][This message has been edited by Tony Whitter (edited 05 November 2001).]

Some people are so heartlessThanks for the sympathy vote Reg, but I do have to pick you up on your English reading here. My post said, “ for supplying … no means of using it” (i.e. the woman) not “I have no means [of using it]”! Gosh…I had no idea that such ‘talent’ attended track day events!I must make sure that I regularly attend such sporting events now - if only as a spectator!
