Doing a few jobs to the car today and had to remove the lh side intercooler pipe from the supercharger. Part of me now wishes I hadn’t.
When I took it off I found a thin film of what I can only describe as Graphite paste. Dark grey. I had some solvent spray so I sprayed the inside and poured it into the can lid.
There must be 30 very very tiny metal particles in there, smaller than a grain of sand.
I have read tonight that the mp62 is a magnusun built eaton unit and that they coated the twin screws in a Graphite coating where eaton used a Teflon which may explain the Graphite.
My question really is could it be the charger eating Itself?? . the car has never been on track and only has 20500 miles so I’m a little bemused.
I’m going to have to investigate further I think… More so for piece of mind. The cars not been driven hard but speaking to powerhouse in Chesterfield who rebuild the Mp62 units they either last 100k+ or around 20-30k miles.
Magnusun who make the units for eaton won’t supply direct and have instructed me to contact lotus, monkey wrench have them on the shelve at £1200 or there the option of a rebuild.
I have however heard that once rebuilt there a ticking time bomb untill they let go taking the engine and a complete replacement is the only solution, although I’m not sure if that’s true or not.
Here’s what came out into a aerosol lid. I have highlighted the metallic particles. Ignore the bits at the top.
Couple of months ago lotus where selling some stock to dealers at reasonable prices It included mp62 chargers.
I will look to see if they are still available
I’ve got the 240r wheel all sorted now and hopefully will have the ap 4 pot setup fitted in a few weeks. Just when I was about to get the exhaust side sorted this rears it’s head.
I’m going to endoscope the supercharger tomorrow and see if there’s anything obvious.
Sadly Lotus have sold them all, sorry.
Its very easy to remove the whole supercharger and take it apart for a proper look.
I did mine middle of last year. Give me a call if you want to know any info…
There’s a company local to me called powerhouse in Chesterfield who rebuild them. Speaking to somebody yesterday they told me they were warned off rebuilding them as they do them on there exige race cars and have mixed success. They said they take the engine when they fail so would buy a new one…
Cheers Jonny. Will have to sort out those harnesses when your ready.
That thought did cross my mind last night Fish. I’m going to whip them off and see but I doubt it.
I endoscoped the outlet tonight but taking photos of the display isn’t the best… A few scratches on the outer of the veins on the lh. I coulnt see the rh vein tip. The coating across both veins though looks good with no flaking or signs of impact near the centres
Maybe Dave could comment here as I know he’s had his apart before…
