In the process of putting producing a plywood splitter for the car. I’ve made some brackets to add some additional support from the crash structure. For templates I’ve just been using a cheap bit of ply from B&Q but need to get some proper marine ply for the finished article.
Question for those that have done this in the past or have seen one of the GT3 cars close up, would you use 6mm or 9mm ply. 6mm is going to be lighter, but also more prone to damage. 9mm would be sturdier but then the concern is if it doesn’t break am I risking the crash structure instead.
From an aesthetic point of view wondering how thick that carbon splitter of yours is Jonny.
What about the 211, guess I’m after something similar, so how thick is that?
Will, can’t advise on the thickness, but may I suggest that you use nylon bolts to affix the splitter? The Edwards Boyz plastic splitters for the S1 use the nylon bolts, & I can vouch for their effectiveness of shearing…preventing damage to the part they’re bolted onto.
Thanks guys. Not sure about the nylon, but I’ll definitely take a look at the new mounts and make sure that the weakest point isn’t at the crash structure.
I reckon 9mm. I bought both 6mm and 9mm and 6mm flexed too much. I can stand on mine and I wouldn’t want to try that with 6mm ply.
If I re-do mine at some point I’m going to use the stuff that is used to deck trailers. It’s stronger and you can get a much nicer cut/finish compared to ply.
I must get some nylon bolts though. Where did you get yours??
I’ll have a look for you in the morning mate see what thickness the 2-11 one comes in at (from memory it is about 8-9mm thick).
Tbh I’ve taken the large splitter from the aero pack off and I’m just using the std one again, far too much front end grip with the big one on (you’d really need a full size GT style rear wing to compliment it and you would need to use tie-bar anchors from the front of the splitter edges back to crash structure to give it the support and rigidity it would require to do its job properly …
The splitter on the GT3 cars were not attached to the front clam at all iirc, they were fixed somehow to the chassis/crash structure…??
Cheers, you aren’t the first I’ve heard of that prefers the std splitter on the 211. I’m now running a Reverie 211 rear wing on my car and even with the wing fully backed off I’m not quite as happy with the high speed balance as I was with the previous tail gate mounted wing so am just experimenting for now.
Splitter is being mounted onto the crash structure, including the extrusions that come out over the oil coolers so I’m pretty confident that it will be stable. Front most mount comes from the base of the tow pole. Looking at about 3" out in front of the clam as a starting point, and see how I get on. Simple to trim back if too much.
