Painted garage floors

Question for Exige Brains Trust:
Anybody painted their concrete garage floor successfully? If so, what paint did you use and how did you prepare the surface?
I primed and painted mine about 20 years ago( the Ryder Cup was on and I painted myself into a corner, I was so excited listening to the radio)
It’s had some hammer but from the start it seemed that the surface had not sealed properly in places.
I’m anxious to do a proper job as I have had a purge, new door, bike racks, shelving etc.
Thanks, in advance.

I used polyurethane floor paint, it usually comes in various shades of grey or a dark red. You can drop tools and it won’t damage the paint, it is incredibly durable. Its also easier to sweep up when painted

Really recommend a 2 pack paint from Watco
I used the High gloss one.(grey) I acid etched the concrete first (they supply that too). Been down about 2years, sure it gets dirty but sure as hell isn’t coming off.

Hey, Pete, you’re right, grey will look good with yellow.
When I first painted the floor (grey) I did not own a Lotus of any description.

Thanks, chaps, for the speedy responses. Looks like I’ve got some DIY to do.

The 2 part paint is best much more durable than paint type paint.

Mine was painted with dark red floor paint when garage was built 10 years ago and is still ok except where the cars tyres are where the paint has lifted.

Those Dura floor tiles would be nice though

Preparation is the key Steve (no pun intended).

You need to either completly remove the old paint (not easy if a large portion of the original is still bonded to the floor), then sacrify the concrete, vacuum all the debris and dust before re-painting using a sealer base coat & top coats (2 should be fine) using a good quality floor paint as above.

Second (easier option) is to scrape away all loose paint, making sure you lift all loose edges back to sound adhered paint edges. Then scarify the exposed concrete/lightly abrade the old paint. re-seal exposed concrete and then apply 1-2 coat of new floor paint.

Use a spiked roller to apply the paint. You can even get shoe spikes so you can walk on the wet stuff if necessary.

Just looked at Watco site. It’s pretty expensive stuff but looks like it’s the sort I’ll need.
I really fancy interlocking tiles but Mrs Thommo reckons they’ll just hold dust. I said I’d Hoover 'em.
Anyone any experience of such?

You could opt for a heavy duty vinyl floor with seam welded joints and a skirting? Get the type with the grit embedded in the surface. It will need a 100% bond to the floor, and for best look you’ll need to screed any imperfections on the existing surface. Best done by a professional imho.

ya gets wot u pay for

I used Watco on a factory floor 7 years ago and still looking good even with fork lifts and pallet trucks. As said prep. is key. Watco give advice re prep. and finish. Give them a call, that’s what I did

CostCo has some rolls of garage floor plastic that are great… I did my garage a few years back now and they still look great.

Sod the floor, how’s the car looking Dave? You gonna be running at Anglesey?

The problem with tiles Steve is you need a really flat floor otherwise it will look crap, plus if the tiles are not bedded fully they will loosen/break. Best to stick with paint or vinyl imho.

workshop floor tiles?

Don’t ask mate !

Really need to kick my arse into gear !

Another vote for two-pack here. I did my garage last year in normal garage floor paint quite expensive. It is fine for foot fall and general wear but once my rear tyres with the weight above touch it, the paint comes away with it.
I park on a piece of carpet now for the rear wheels.

Thanks, one and all. Tupac, it is then!
Don’t hold your breath for results, though. I do a lot of procrastinating . . .

Is this for your garage in the afterlife then???

I used a PVA sealer on newley laid concrete which I think is needed. Then Ronseal Garage Floor paint which I don’t rate and have needed to recover already in 2 years, mostly where the wheels run, it has lifted.
There was some discussion about this on another forum and this stuff: Bradite Floor Paint made by Brewers Protective Coatings (sorry can’t make link work)seems to be highly rated, I’m going to give it a go.
