Overheating..

Hi all,

My car seems to have decided that it wants to cook itself at low speeds or whilst sat in traffic as it will happily reach 110 before I have to quickly turn the engine off! Ive also noticed the heater is not producing any heat, so checked the coolant levels and these are fine. The car does however seem to be fine when travelling at a decent speed, or if I hold the engine around 3k whilst been stationary - this warms the heater up and also brings the temperature down to its normal range.

My initial thoughts were that I have an airlock (will try and bleed the system tonight), but the coolant system has been fine since it was flushed around 8 months ago. Im now beginning to think the water pump might be failing as it seems to be rpm related!?

Anybody else had a similar problem?

Sounds like H/G … hope not tho …
:frowning:

The fan on the toyota should come on at 104 and cool the car down to below 100 when sitting in traffic. My car hit 98 in traffic yesterday on the M25 and was fine after speed picked up to 50mph.

I doubt it should get that hot as the fan brings the temps down really quickly. Is the fan coming on? Check the thermostat?

The fans were not the problem. They were coming on as normal, just not cooling the car down at all. The cold coolant didn’t seem be flowing from the radiator to the engine unless at high rpm, which is why I thought the water pump could of gone.

Anyway…I re-bled the system yesterday on Friday, and all seems well now - I’ve covered over 200miles this weekend already and running temp is back to normal. Still seems very strange that airlock was the problem when the coolant has been fine since it was re-bled 8 months ago!

Will keep any eye on it though incase it could be headgasket failure!
