Oil Temperature on Exige S

Hi everyone,

I have the following issue that I would like to request your help.

Since beginning of 2009, I have 2 gauges installed in my Exige S (2007): the oil temperature and the oil pressure. I don’t have any issue with the oil pressure, so I can skip it.

My configuration:
Exige S (2007)
Oil: Shell Helix Ultra 5W40
2 Front Oil Radiators
Gauge “Motor Meter Racing” (Elise-Shop)
The sensor is mounted on the “sandwich plate” (oil filter)

Gauge Measure Indications:

After a while (20 min riding at different tempo’s) the oil temperature indicated by the gauge followed the rise in temperature of the water, but it’s never goes above the 70C (for the oil when the water is reaching the 88C)…

I have already checked all the connections, all the cables, the power, etc, I have replaced all the material (gauge, sensor, cables) by a new set, and I still not get a temperature above the 70C…

So I am a little bit lost in my quest… If somebody can help me to sort this out, I will really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Frederic.

Tried removing the sensor and putting it in boiling water? Just to test it will hit near 100…

Yep, I have already done that with the previous set, running from the kitchen to the garage (10 meters) with boiling water… and I never got the 90C… 70C max…
Tomorrow, I will try again with the new material (new sensor, new gauge etc…)… if it doesn’t indicate that temperature… I will be lost, because every centimer has been checked… so the gauges can go back to the supplier!

For normal driving I firmly think that the twin oil coolers are too big for the road, if you try it on track I think you will find a stable higher temperature.

Thanks Ade, but the taking of temperature is done in upstream as normally the oil has not reached the twin oil coolers? or am I wrong on that?

Anyway, I have done the test with boiling water, and the result is clear: 70C give by 2 different sets (gauge, sensor, etc), so for me this material is crap, sorry but I have lost hours on that… I thought I done a mistake on the installation but it’s not.

What is wrong with 70C? Isn’t that within the recommended parameters of the oil?

My Honda runs at 60-80C on the road, but can go to 120C on track. These are the “indicated” temps on my Racetech gauge, which I don’t consider to give 100% accurate temps - the gauge is there for me monitor changes to the norm. I use Silkolene 5-40 fully synth oil.

If the gauge can’t provide the right temperature in boiling water, I stop there… if I got 90C with boiling water, I will be confident by any measures shown.

Yeah sounds like you have cracked it with a bit of dodgy gauge syndrome. Never heard of having one that far out. nightmare!!

I just wonder if anyone has a reliable reference for a oil temp gauge. I don’t want to pay $$ for a Spa, but I am ready to invest in STACK if they have passed the test of the boiling water

SPA are good and I love the new 52mm Stack gauges, although I have no experiance with them.

Thanks, I made another test (thank to Christian in Belgium). I put the sensor in boiling water, connected to a multimeter, it appears that the sensor works…

So apparently I am the only unsatisfied customer on a range of 400, so I need to find if there is resistance in the wiring. Anyway, it’s a good lesson for me to learn the quality of support of a supplier.

there should be a resistance in the wire as it will be really small. if there is then i would recommend investing in some “compensating wire” it stops the resistance in the cable and gives a more accurate reading even at a further distance.

Thanks Ash, I will inquire on that “resistance in the wire” as I am not soo good in electrical discussions.

By the way, it’s a big “mystery” that one gauge (pressure) shows correct values and the other (oil) doesn’t show reliable data… and they are connected together so the oil gauge receives the power and I have a wire to the second gauge to share the power…
