Oil pressure and temp gauges?

To the side of the drain plug.

And one last thing, what’s the sealant used to seal again the sump?
(Loctite something, can’t remmember)

Yeah Dave quoted some loctite sealant that he uses, can’t remember what post that was on. I just use silicon sealant and use it sparingly. I have never had a problem, but Dave did mention some very very valid points.

Sean…

I found it!

Here it is:

My advice would be never use a silicone based sealant on a sump or anywhere inside an engine. Instead use an anaerobic sealant such as Loctite 574, this makes a perfect seal and has the advantage that it will only set in the joint, any which spills from the joint will simply wash away rather than break off, swell up and block your pickup. I have seen at least a dozen engines wrecked through ingress of silicone or other sealants into the oil strainer.

Dave

So I’ll go and buy some of that and drill and tap the sump

Service manual says:

the same sealant is also used for:

Camshaft carrier
Cylinder head
Cylinder block
Oil rail

and is the same product according to HERE as

Sean - did you drain the oil b4 drilling the hole???

Sorry Uldis couldn’t resist

Need to add something here. Up until last Friday night my oil temp sender was mounted in an Elise parts sump plug. I changed my oil the night before Donno only to have the threaded part of the Elise parts sump plug shear off in the sump when I was tightening it back up. It sheared off without being tight at all. Upon investigation it was easy to see that the wall thickness of the threaded part of the sump plug was virtually nothing.

I have since used a standard sump plug and have drilled and tapped the sump.

My advice here is to do the same.

Sean…

Exactly the same happened to me 2 days before Donington.
On a closer inspection, the problem is that the inside thread almost meets in places with the outside thread ald leaves much less than a mm of wall thickness, didn’t measure it, but must be in the order of 1/5 mm
Bad idea.

Have the oil temp sensor unplugged now.
So, Sean, did you remove the sump to drill it? or just did it there and hoped the filter picks the swarf?

Same happend to me, i was at the dealer having a service and got the mechanic to pop the new brass jobbie in during the oil change. Sheared straight off, I have subsequently fitted another one but it is not so tight and I have a bit of sealant as security. I will also make steel one based on the original sump plug.
