It would seem to me that without doubt the best mod would be to have proper freestream air directed into the I/C.
You’re getting carried along with all this “modification/increased power bullshit for the sake of it”, on here, mate. Best mod for only 400 is a one to one day of driver tuition with Mike Wilds. By all means fit better parts etc once the originals wear out (only exception being brake pads), but change for change sake is just self delusional. I’ve been guilty of it in the past, so I appreciate that it’s an easy option to take, especially after someone with a perceived “lesser car” is obviously quicker than you on track. Our cars (S1 or S2 Exige/Elise/211 etc) are all bloody brilliant on track straight out of the box, & it’s driver experience/talent that is the biggest factor in practice, not car spec. Modifications for “road only” use in the UK are a total joke in reallity, unless you worship at the shrine of Top Gear/Clarkson along with gullible Joe Public.
Must dash - off to WH Smith’s for the latest edition Max Power
Think of the I/C as your water radiator. If you sit in traffic on a hot day, the water temps rise until the fans kick in… more airflow! Then when you get going the temps drop even more as the airflow increases!
The intercooler is doing exactly the same thing mate! So sitting stationary on a RR with the readient heat of the engine giving the I/C heat soak with no free stream air WILL result in a lower air density and a loss of power.

Sorry mate I should of explained better, forgetting temps what I mean is the physical amount of intake air the IC cn flow and how cleanly it can flow it, ie greater volume and less turbulant.

Happy New Year Rob!!!
Disagree with you on this one mate! … you have got my ‘motives’ wrong!
This is not why I am making a few simple humble mods to my car! All I would like is to have what I have working as efficiently as possible! So that means nice cold air into a throttle body that will actually open 100% (instead of 65%!!! ) and out an exhaust that wont strangle the car but still pass a Donny noise test!
On the flip side, I completly do agree with your point that aside from that, the only other thing I will do is indeed take lessons from Mike, (also the very good JP who helped me masses at Donny) and I am a very happy camper! I have a lot to learn and really do enjoy learning more… but I totally know where my talent limit is too!!!
Spoken from an ex S1 owner who knows how much fun it is to wind up 300BHP Supercharged rice burning S1’s and S2’s with a 200 bhp ‘K’ series!!!
Not all shops are closed Pete!!
This one is open 24/7/365…
We have even thought of a petition to No10 to increase the hours in a day LOL.
Will try and get a pass for the garage later this evening from SWMBO and get you those measurements.
Laugh all you want guys, & make all the excuses you can to justify pi$$ing your hard earned down the sewer, instead of investing it where it will be of benefit
PS Don’t forget to invest in some new tyre valve caps, once you “can” drive what you bought, out of the box, to the max
PPS To test your new found performance enhancements, why not organise a sprint from Trafalgar Square to the top of the Cat & Fiddle & back again - after midnight of course?
Hmmmm Pesky cant say to much as you are a customer, But whY the special brakes? Is that not classed as modding?? LOL
Pete the forge cooler is 38cm x 11cm x 18cm
The mounting holes are 40cm wide and 15cm deep, hope that helps
Yawn - was paintjob supposed to be a performance upgrade? Was it bollox! The Honda conversion made emminent sense in every respect given the car’s extensive use - at that point 36K miles with the “delicate” VHPD, & incl. 50 odd trackdays.
Dave - Brakes - after owning my car from new (Jan 2001) & doing 86K miles including 100+ trackdays, my brakes tend to need occasional replacement As a matter of interest, the oem discs weren’t changed until they were worn out at 36K miles, & my 4 pot fronts went on in 2006 i.e 1 year after my n/a Honda Conversion, & with a s/c upgrade scheduled for a year later. My recent purchase of discs is only the 3rd replacement set - all only after wearing out the existing items - & not because I want to “bling up” These will be my 2nd set of AP discs, after the previous ones gave 3 years of fantastic service.

Three years!! Shit I hope the onNes I sold you last as well as those!! No doubt I’ll be in trouble of not!!
Don’t worry Dave, I now drive like a wuss due to lack of talent, & practice Like I said before, stuff only gets replaced when it’s knackered - you’ll be amazed at the state of the APs which are coming off - I’ll bring them to the Buckles to give you a laugh!
PS Banter on this site is very much tongue in cheek, & is encouraged to be a 2 way thing amongst like minded folks who like to meet up at trackdays, & enjoy socialising together
Pesky you old tight fart, why do people “doing what they want” with there hard earned dosh wind you up so much???
Yeah, you rattle on about driver tuition and everyone knows that it is the best investment you can make, but people will ALWAYS mod there cars. Get over it my aged friend. As has been pointed out, your car is more modded than most you hiper-crocker-pig-fish!!!
I mean Jesus, you have even had you bloody arteries replaced with big bore modified items!!!
