A question for you all!!A dealer told me that "all Exige’s use oil"Is this true and if so how much seems to be normal?? and anybody been given a sensible reason why?? I work in the motor trade and find it hard to belive that just because the car is no standard K series unit it should use oil to any great extent. Does anybody find differant oils give differant oil consumptions??Dave
It’s probably true that they all use oil. How much they use varies considerably. Mine used to use about 1 litre per thousand miles. Then I had a problem which led to my cylinder liners wearing badly. It was then using 1 litre every 100 miles [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/shocked.gif[/image] Following an extensive rebuild, it now uses more like a litre every 4000 miles. Most people say they expect to use at least half a litre after a track day. It’s definately well worth checking your oil regularly.
DavidA search through the archives will confirm what Brendan says. It is not uncommon to use 1 litre per 1 to 2 thousand miles, or 1/2 to 1 litre per trackday.Mobil 1 Motorsport seems to be the oil of choice!
DaveIf you use the car for trackdays its worth considering fitting a catch tank IMHOThe surge at the top of the head causes quite some oil to go into the breathing system and then into the inlet manifold to be burnt off - it also “gums” up the butterflys something horrible.I cleaned out my catch tank recently after two track days and maybe 300-400 road miles and there was a good layer in there. Of course it now will not pass the MOT becuase it has no closed breather system - but its easy to put it all back - or whatever [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image]
Guys, for what is worth, I have done about 7 trackdays with teh Exige and a 3400miles round trip to Italy (giving it a good go in the Italian autostrada) and it drings about 1L per 1500 miles. When driven slowly, I cannot measure any oil consumption at all.But even after the track days I have inspected the insides of the airbox and have found no residues at all. The butterflys are ok.And yet, the oil is being bursnt, you can see the back of the car covered in a dark “dust” that doesn’t wash away easily, leaving the washing sponge really black. It’s not going through the breather hose in my case.Rgds,Uldis
hmmmm…I’m using about 1 lit per 1000 km… [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/shocked.gif[/image] but then again, one can’t call me engine a standard one anymore… [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/grin.gif[/image]
For comparison, my Elise with DVA 200bhp head (well…198bhp) only uses about 0.25 litre per 4000 miles (every oil change) Bri[This message has been edited by bdrought (edited 12 December 2002).]
I’ve said it before - mine does not use a drop!!!I’ve even thought of loosening the drain plug.
