Oil catch tank

Are these worth while? I have been reading on lotus talk that oil getting into the intercooler can cause problems with efficiency and AIT’s as it gets onto the sensor.
When I took out my stock cooler it had quite alot of oil in it.
Have spoke to Lotus today and the now sell them will this be worth while? Dealer has already fitted them to a few 211’s.
Has anyone else had one fitted yet?

I think oil catch tanks are a great thing. Engines do breath, its a fact of life, especially ones that see a lot of high revs.

Most people simply just catch the oil that is breathed, but your best bet is to also have a return from the bottom of the catch tank back to the sump (below the oil level), so any breathed oil simply returns to the sump, while the vapour escapes to atmosphere out of the top.

Cheers Sean,

I’ll probably get one sorted. I am not happy about it putting oil into the intercooler. Whats the best way to get the oil out of the cooler thats already in there?

Do you need such an Oil Pan also on Non-Supercharged cars, like for example an Elise R ?

Your best bet fro cleaning oil out os something like brake cleaner as it evaporates. Just pour it in andd shake it about and it will be black when you pour it out

Any track car that is revved igh for a long time, can benefit from an oil catch tank in my opinion

Just had the AIT sensor out and its got oil on it, I am guessing hot oil will mess up readings?

Yeah oil in your inlet is not good. On an OE install they feed the outlets from the breathers into the inlet so they go through the engine on ommissions grounds. But oil and oil vapour WILL increase the chance of detonation in your engine. Another good reason to feed any breathed oil and vapours into a seperate catch tank.
