Chaps, i’m going to bite the bullet and upgrade to these but just had a question about fitting.
I was going to do it through Plans, but they are a bit of a trek from me and I have good faith in my local Lotus dealer. They can also do the geo and corner weighting.
Would anyone have any strong feelings against getting the dealer to do it? Anything special about the Plans Geo setup?
My view is you are better going to a workshop that has race experience.
There are many bolt a kit on tuners and dealers fall into this category. Sure you’ll get a nice kit installed and a factory geo. But a team with real track/race experience is always going to be better.
The geo is the real trick. Doesn’t matter who does the install if they take the time to set it exactly as you want, and you know what you want in the first place, but if you go to a specialist they will be able to advise on what to go for.
Simple things like not having the weight of the driver in the car when its setup make a big difference. Do you want the car setup with just the driver weight, or passenger as well?
Just my opinion but I had two-way Ohlins on my VXR220 before the Exige and I found them too complicated and also Plans put the remotes in very awkward places in the boot so getting at them was a pain and you couldn’t hear/feel the clicks. I’m no driving god by any means so the better (and cheaper) upgrade for me would be one-way.
Anyone got some Ohlins or Nitrons they want to get shot of?
I used to think the same but went on track in a car with them (Jonny Fox) and the difference on track was huge.
I’m not into fiddling with settings either, I just want so stop the car rolling so much in corners so this was my chosen solution. I’m also no great driver, but I do push the car quite hard.
Just having a quick nose around it seems Plans quote two-way Ohlins for 2,131 plus fitting. Eliseparts show two-way Nitrons from 1,580 (not sure if that’s the Exige version or not) and one-way from 980 (ditto). There’s obviously a decent price hike if you go for the two-way. I’m not sure I’m talented enough, or do enough trackdays, to really get to grips with two-way versions.
I’ll go for the one-way and spend the money I’ve saved on beer and women
Mark to stop the car rolling the 1 way Nitrons will be more than fine, mine does not roll now with the nitrons and turn in is epic! I just need someone to please explain to me the settings but nobody wants too
I’m using Evo’s old Ohlins and skeptically recall saying to him that my car felt great pre-purchase of those shocks and wondered if I was doing the right thing! Well he assured me I was…I’ve never looked back.
I’ve kept the ARB on max, never change it not wanting to over complicate things. I changed the set up first off to 240R road settings from the service manual, quite soft but I’m only learning. A few track days later and my control on under and over steer is way better than what it was. Now I run the set up according to the Ohlin recommendations for Donnington on Seloc. The car feels well sorted…and I’ve got braver. So all I’ve done is follow other people…easy see!? Actually only now I’m starting to tinker and even that is well taken advice. Basically I brake very hard and even with the car set up the way it is it might pay to add a click or two on the front bump to stop the front end dipping so much BUT how that’ll affect the car overall only a few more laps will tell…bloody addictive this or what If I get it wrong I can just go back to the way it was!
What I’m trying to say is 2 ways are only as complicated as you want to make them. I’m sure someone else will be along to tell how wrong I am…Im just taking it slow and easy but fook me they are a world apart from the standard Bilsteins.
My dampers are the Hofmann spec with rear helpers, Randy will tune them to your needs I am told (mine were tuned to the last owners but I saved a good chunk) the spec I have are just shy of 1500. They have height adjustment and adjustment for the stiffness which is more than enough for me.
So far I have found the body control is fantastic and the car seems to turn in better, ride quality is pretty much as good as the std set up (not crashy at all).
I just need to play with adjustments now to find the best road set up for my needs.
