If you read what he actually said, he said it as a comparision of the current Lotus aerodynamics to the front runners when comparing the Minardi to the top cars at that time.
It’s pretty well known that the Lotus aero is lacking a bit but they have plenty of time to progress.

Clearly there is along way to go but you have completely mis-interpreted what was said and surely you didn’t expect them to hit the front of the grid in Bahrain??? This is no re-badged, re-engined Honda such as Brawn got lifted to the front with last year. This is a totally new car. This wasn’t even drawn 5 months ago, let alone built and tested.

Fingers crossed that the finances are in place to fund the likely/realistic 3 to 5 years needed to become front runners.
To be honest, I think that’s not bad… for a brand new, low budget team to be about where a perennial low-budget team was (relatively speaking) about 8 years ago.
The Lotus has rubbish aero currently… you can bank on the fact that every update will be significant (rather than the front runners, which will be more incremental). By mid-season, you’d think that the T127 will be a lot closer to the front runners than it is now.

I am not doing the criticising just being the post boy. …None of us want them to fail and if the enthusiasm of the fans alone could push them along, they would be winners. 
When I was trading within F1 there were only 2 “Brands” the fans followed …Lotus and Ferrari…most other fans follow individual drivers…so the following will be massive
