I know absolutely bug ger all about engines, but would love to know what happens inside my S2 toyo lump when ‘2nd cam’ happens! I know what a cam does, but if anyone can explain in words on as few syllables as possible, I would love to know.

The big bit goes up and down while the small bit goes round and round…Thats my understanding of it anyway.
Sorry, not much help am I?
Oh right, that explains it.
Anyone else?
from what I understand, a hydraulic actuator moves the standard cam over and brings in the second cam which has a different profile. I think?!?
2nd cam changes the timings of the opening and closing of the valves. The 2nd cam has more overlap (both sets of valves slightly open). This is less fuel and emissions efficent but produces more power. Toyota used this to creat two engines in one.
But i think he wants to know (as i do) how the change physically happens.
Is there really a second cam or does some other element come into play in addition to the “first” cam?..etc. What actually happens?
Quite a good explanation here Lotus Elise Toyota Engine Comments

Mark - thanks for the link, I now have a reasonable idea of what goes on behind me when I really press the loud pedal!
