Noise

Seeing as the subject of exhaust noise is being discussed hear and there, thought I’d ask if any body does or is prepared to carry out static and even drive by noise testing?

Or is it simply a case of taking your chances at which ever track you’ve just arrived at, having also spent a chunk of money to attend in the hope of driving around it, but not actually knowing if you’ll be aloud to

I’ve got a noise tester at home, checked mine before turning up at Snetterton. You can also get apps on your phone, not sure how accurate they are but they’ll give you an idea. If you don’t have access to those best bet is to head to your local circuit and see if they’ll test the car for you. I certainly wouldn’t take my chances without first having an idea of my ‘noise’

With regards to the Exige S I’ve heard that quite a few have struggled with noise on the drive bys, I think the Supercharger and in a lot of case induction adds to the exhaust note when under load?

trouble is…weather and wind direction and strength play a big part in what db is recorded on drive by meters. Best to make friends with the marshals on arrival if you think you are close to the limit and ask them to give you a reading after your 1st session.

My TRD Airboxed Exige S with the standard exhaust in place was as quiet as a church mouse.

It might not have sounded as good as some of the after market exhausts, but at least I was always safe in the knowledge that it would pass every noise test with out any problems. Plus the drive home was nice and quiet.

I have a few standard Exige S exhausts knocking around, if anybody wants one.

How much are you after Sean? My exhaust is quite loud so a OEM box on hand for a quite day could be a good idea?

I gave about £40 each for them, so that kind of dosh would work.

Can you collect, as they are a bit big and heavy.

Hmm hadn’t considered wind direction etc.

So what happens if you are too loud? Tough luck, you can’t play or have your money back, come back with a quieter set-up…?

How many on here have suffered from the noise police?

Short shift, learn where the static meters are and swerve dangerously to the otherside of the track

Didn’t think your car sounded that loud from the pit wall, well from memory anyway. Just borrow a metre, do some drive by tests, I guess if its borderline on that you’ll be screwed at a track.

is your car modified Bomber and what tracks are you thinking about?

if you break the limit at Bedford your day’s over. if you break it at donnington or combe i believe they let you out again as long as you can show you’ve done something to reduce the noise of your car, e.g. if it’s got a sport button or you have some sort of muffler to attach.

unless you have a completely mental exige you’ll be fine on pretty much any static test though i think croft could be a problem for some people. It’s the drive by that’s the difficulty, this is something to do with being supercharged and also if you have a TRD or whatever it’ll be screaming like a banshee at redline.

if for whatever reason you’re worried about breaking the limit just go along, drive slow, find out where all the meters are and hold your revs at a reasonable level while your going past each one, build up your speed over the morning and talk to the marshals after each session to find out if you’re one of the loud ones, just ramp it up slowly and hopefully you’ll be redlining past every meter without issue by the end of the morning. Oh, if you’re within 1dB of the limit Bedford will hold up a ‘noise’ sign as a bit of a warning but tbh if you’re that close you’re gonna break the limit at some point, the wind will catch it or you’ll forget to lift on one corner or whatever.

I’ll take some pics of the silencer Jim built me and stick them up.

I’m just talking in generalities about noise, not an issue with mine or any track in particular.

It seems to be very easy for people to say “oh that set-up will be too loud for (insert track)”, so I was just curious how this apparent issue can be addressed before turning up, or when at the circuit, and the answers above have helped, but ultimately there is still a risk you’ll be sent packing.

Do manufacturers such as Jim at 2bular test their new creations statically on a number variants in order to give some rough guidance? Or are there some complex calculations carried out by men in white coats based on varying factors?

Obviously an airing towards a modified set-up creates the unknown, and you takes your chances. Personally I have no idea how loud mine is (OEM 240+TRD+Stage3), but as Mr Fox says its not too loud from the pitfall, that must have been because I was lifting off for fear of the noise police obviously

here’s a standard exhaust for free if anyone fancies:

Bomber - when my car was OEM 240 with stage 3 exhaust and no TRD i was fine on static everywhere i went (oulton, blyton, bedford, rockingham, then silv and anglesey don’t seem to test), it was fine on driveby at oulton and it required a lot of lift off at bedford, it would have failed the donny drive by for sure.

swapping the exhaust for a Tubular 24*8 GT3 with silenced de-cat pipe, adding the TRD and upping the power to 285bhp the car was significantly quieter but still failed the drive by at bedford and donny on full chat. Taking it easy past the meters was fine though, not ideal but not a day ruiner.

Jim built me an additional bolt on silencer in Autumn and the car passed the 4 meters at bedford all day in Jan, eventually taking them all at full chat with no problems until the wind changed direction and we failed the drive by on the last session

anyway, based on what i’ve read about various tracks and the known noise limits i think going to croft would be a waste of time, combe would probably boot me off and i think goodwood as well. i’m not really fussed about any of those anyway tbh, really all i want is hassle free driving at bedford and donny since oulton, cadwell, rockingham, anglesey, brands and silverstone will all be fine. i think we’re about there with passing noise at bedford n donny so it’s all good.

don;t think many builders test their exhausts because there are so many other variables - power, induction, weather, that it wouldn;t be thsat useful/

I do however think there’s a market for some sort of quiet sports exhaust, and this market will only get bigger as noise tests get more restrictive

oh, also i believe easytrack or circuitdays, one of them, you can buy first session insurance for 20quid which refunds you for your day if you fail the driveby first session

yeah couldnt agree more. The problem will ony get bigger as the circuits recieve complaints and with the arrival of so many ECU solutions, power goes up
A nice looking system, giving good power that meets the noise police requirements will sell like hot cakes

I’ll let you know how I get on at Coombe this Friday and Goodwood on Saturday

Graeme
What power /spec engine are you running please?
Ta
Dave

Estimated 320 fly

Coombe. just not an issue.
goodwood, 91 static at 6000 rpm, but that seems low . I didn’t upset the drive by meters set to 101. One of the guys in an RBG exige has just fitted Jims track friendly chambered box with an OEM through the diffuser tip. He tripped the meter at 101.2
I’m not offering opinion, only information. Messenger/ shooting etc

Good info on your system Graeme
What spec is your engine/mods?
IE Supercharger pulley size? Injectors etc
Mine is running the standard SC with a 2.9 pulley, 550 injectors, manifold and full system, no air flow meter with a big k&n filter, light flywheel, aftermarket ECU.(measured 302 flywheel hp but who knows how acurate the rolling roads are? I just know we had a 21% improvement over the reading at the start of the mapping session)
Basically a standard engine with a few very easy external mods, nothing special
