I took my S2 to Bedford (with new gear cables - much better) and to my dismay a marshal waived a noise board at me when I had the track to myself just before lunch. Evidently I was within 1 db at two of the noise posts (it was a windy day). The car was a NA S2 Exige which now has the Lotus “Elise” charger, it has the Elise Parts largest silencer box and (this is where I think it gets dodgy) a TRD airbox - that Oaksmere kindly fitted to my car when they added the charger (at no cost).
I rather like Bedford (being a coward at heart) and do not want to get chucked off. I have got the old airbox and snorkel. Should I refit them? Will the charger work OK with them fitted? I know some people suggest not using the snorkel on the std box but that makes a dreadful racket in the car.
Pit lane views told me my car was very quiet on drive by BUT It does snap and pop on the overrun.

…it was really good to drive an Exige after a couple of day in a Caterham.
Reverting to the original air box and snorkel makes it same as standard Exige S set up (assuming the OE S air box is same as the OE N/A air box) so shouldn’t be a problem running that and certainly be quieter…
‘Elise Parts largest silencer box’ this is the exhaust right?
My understanding is ‘most’ aftermarket exhausts will be ok assuming they haven’t had the stuffing knocked out of them (which the S/C does over time) the addition of the TRD air box adds a few more db so worth going back to OE set up, if that’s still noisy you always have the option to repack the box.
My Exige was 91 db static (an electric car). I was warned at 1 db below the limit so I was around 86 db drive by. It only happened on the empty track before lunch when I was pushing on an getting lots of exit understeer (maybe added tyre squeal). My car is generally quiet (I like it that way). I think it was pops and bangs on the overrun. I have been told it makes quite crackle. As I said, I will put the standard airbox back on over the winter. No loss as Oaksmere fitted it for free.
Long term problem is that most circuits are under the noise cosh threat or if not directly under threat they wisely have to reduce their noise footprint.
Seems that airports dont have that problem …Glad I dont live near Heathrow ,but wont bother me …I’ll be long gone underground by the time the new runway is built
Enjoy Bedford before the 15000 houses arrive …it will be more difficult then
Find out where the noise meters are and have a lift, ask the marshals to let you know if you’re getting close. I’ve driven my SC Honda there on that basis and still had plenty fun…
