Thinking of getting a set of these to replace my 4 year old NTRs.
Has anyone got the 46mm fitted - is the difference going to be noticeable?
Cheers,
Rich A.

Hi Rich!
Mate you were right… ‘Don’t sell it Pete’ last year at PM’s!
But, the good news is I am back… but in the real one!
46mm Nitrons… YES, a BIG step up mate.
I fitted a set of these to my S2 2 years ago… they were GREAT on track but the road ride was ‘firm’ to say the least!
Nitron have spent a lot of time this year developing the 46mm damper. They had one engineer solely devoted to this for over a month to really sort the settings to make the damper have that elusive ability to be great on track as well as the road.
I had a set of these fitted to ‘Shrek’ to replace the OEM LSS on the car. A no brainer really and they are a huge step on on these and also the 40mm I had originally on my S2. I think the thought is based upon the simple fact that the greater diameter with more fluid allows not only greater control of the bump and rebound flow, but also they ‘fade’ less as the greater fluid volume does not get as hot over repeated cycles, so is more ‘predictable’. On track, they were very well controlled in pitch and also helped roll damping as well. Riding the kerbs at Donny in September had the car totally un-phased. Fast road driving is well damped and not harsh at all.
I have been very impressed with them! I think it a totally natural progression for an ‘upgrade’ for peeps in your situation where the original 40mm’s are now perhaps needing a refresh.
Aside from all the tech stuff that has gone into them, they look REALLY cool, with not only the Nitron corporate turquoise spring colour (better springs too!) but also the bigger diameter! And as we all know, size does matter!!!
Hope this is useful!
Cheers, Pete
Pete,
Good to hear from you. I won’t say “I told you so…”
Sounds like a done deal after reading that
What no haggling, none, just straight in at the asking price
I wouldn’t go that far - always looking for a deal!
How much will they set you back? I only ask as Sean has those nearly new 1 way 46mm Ohlins for sale…
No idea. I’m planning on selling a spare set of wheels and old Nitrons to fund this.
Not to start a whole debate but worth asking Sean, they are truley amazing.
how much for those Ohlins Sean? Probably the best damper we’ve used on any S1 or S2 other than the TTX’s
So are the evolved 46mm Nitrons mate!!!
I haven’t tried Nitrons so can’t comment buddy but I bet a race team have You may choose to plug Nitron like I do JSRacing but Ohlins do there own talking. I just thought my fellow cheap scate (just kidding) MLOC’er might want that choice
Not ‘plugging’ man!
Like you, I have not ‘tried’ Ohlins… except as a pax in your car! Result… Bloody slow!!! (get an S1 dude!!!)
Seriously, choice is great. All I can do is simply comment on what I have experienced and that is all I can do from an unbiased point of view.
Nitron are a great small UK business and have done so much for the Lotus community! AND they do take seriously making things better and better through real time R and D! Chris R has been seriously involved in the development I understand and his race results speak for themselves!
The evolved 46mm’s are a great product! Having bought my first set of NTR’s a few years ago, the evolution and improvements over time are significant… That is just simply a fact! It’s great that they are not just sitting on their laurels!

What did you end up doing Rich? did you buy the Nitron 46mm?
Still haven’t decided either way!!!
Still fancy the 46mm Nitrons with custom valving.

Can’t tempt you to a 46mm Ohlins mini group buy?

Give Nitron a call mate! They will be very able to suggest a set-up that suits! A lot of work with these, with Chris Randy input too, has been done over the last 4 months. The 46mm now on my S1 are a noticeable step up on the 40mm and then the 46mm’s I had on my S2 2 years ago.
