Phew, where to start!!
S1s are the real deal, hard core nutters, collectors item car.
They require careful maintenance and the engine isn’t going to last much longer than 40K without requiring an expensive rebuild. This is why a lot get converted to Honda/ Audi Power. If you want to buy an S1, then you should get an expert to go along and have a look with you.
S2s are a completely different kettle of fish. They’ve softened up a bit, but all the gadgets work a little bit nicer. The std Toyota engine is reasonably easy to look after and should last well unless its been abused on track. If you are used to everyday cars and wnat something easy to take care of then this is the one to go for.
As far as which is best? Its like comparing Vodka and Champagne. Ones a bit rough but does the job well, the others a bit refined and bling but still bloody effective.
You can find lots of cars for sale here

Love it best S1/S2 analogy ever???
As Bob says, in its simplest form the decision probably boils down to two things
- Whether you want to use it everyday
- Which you thinks looks best (its shallow I know, but lets face it, its true)

I have owned both S1 and S2 Exiges - currently have S1 which I bought last week.
I dont think the above is really true - certainly from my side of the owners fence…
I bought my S2 because I wanted a quick car which wouldnt cost a fortune to own- in my 14 months of ownership it didnt break, not start, breakdown or cost any money other than routine stuff.
I bought my S1 because I have owned S1 + S2 Elise and the S1 Exige was an unticked box - so far, it has not started once (today, think its a fuel pump issue) and it is noisier, less comfortable, but I am enjoying it more - it looks better, and it cost nearly 10k less to buy than my S2 Exige.
I guess what I am trying to say in a longwinded way is try both and then you will know what you want.
