New Elise Engine??

Auto Express today ‘revealed’ that a number of Elises were currently fitted with Toyota Camry V6 engine - presumeably for evaluation purposes? - does anyone know of capabilities/potential of this engine? Toyota reliability has never been in question, but performance? - do you think this may be part of Toyota’s desire (evidence F1 involvement) to be recognised as part of the more sporty fraternity?, their Lexus Sport offering being so lamentable.

RobA friend has recently bought one - he traded in a Merc 320SL - after 2 months ownership he is … well totally gutted!!

AutoExpress is wrong. I have seen the motor and it’s not a V6…Roy

Why is it that the performance pedigree of Japanese car manufacturors is so often doubted? Ever heard of the Toyota Supra? MR2? AE86 Corolla? Honda NSX? Honda RSX Type R? Nissan Z cars, Skylines ofcourse, not to mention the Lancer EVO’s and Impreza’s, Mazda’s RX7 etc etc. You should see JGCT class races, maybe that will change your opinion…So in the UK (and in the rest of Europe) you mostly get the dull Civics, Corollas, Accords, 323’s and such, but that doesn’t mean that these manufacturors don’t know how to build performance cars and engines! It’s a little short-sighted to base your opinion of Japanese performance cars and engines by comparing it to what you generally see on the roads around us. Quick example: Toyota’s 20 Valve 4AGE engine - 165 hp from a 1.6 liter 4 cilinder normally aspirated engine sound performance enough? Unfortunately we don’t get these engines in Europe…Honestly, my personal opinion is that most modern Japanese engines can be considered a high tech performance engine compared to our aging Rover K series…BTW: is a V6 in our Elise/Exige really what we want? Not me… and Autoexpress wrote about a Toyota 2.5 liter V6 and as far as i know, Toyota doesn’t even make a 2.5 ltr V6…

And having a reliable engine in our cars well it just wouldn’t be a Lotus then, for heavens sake, Lotus and reliable are two words that shouldn’t be used in the same sentance !! [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/wink.gif[/image]

I’ll put a 100 quid on a being the first to 160mph on a standing start runway run [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif[/image] [image]http://www.exiges.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/tongue.gif[/image] Jap power is undeniable. The 2JZ-GTE in mine is able to handle 500hp on stock internals…but was strangled down to ~290bhp to meet with the japanese gentleman’s agreement to not produce cars with over 286bhp. All official manufacturers figures top out at 286…though in practice it doesn’t always happen exactly. The engine is a V6 but its not for the elise, LOTUS may use that V6 later…if you get my drift. There is a new engine for the Elise with a different capacity to the K-series. There is an issue though using this engine, which is delaying it…

Whooooa new man from Norwich - if you have engine news please impart…

I don’t want any come back so I won’t give specifics. But lets put it this way they have 2 engines from said manufacturer. the second engine is from the a sports coupe…both are being tested but not for the same car…That really is all I can say. But I think its obvious from that if you know your model line-ups…

It’s the Toyota 1.8VVTI engine as fitted to the Celica. 180ish BHP.

I thought to post some Japanese person’s view to this post. I am from Japan and owns a tuning shop here.

I think Japanese engines are one of the most strongest/reliable engines out there for the price. I tune them and I think they are quite durable. I own a Supra with 1.5JZ(1JZ head 2JZ bottom end) with K26 2670 twin turbo and makes over 700bhp. It is dead reliable and powerful. and best of all, very cheap to tune. I guess it is different situation in other countries, but is is very cheap to tune cars in Japan. Stock Supra will make over 400hp with just boosting up the stock turbos and internal will handle over 700bhp(someone said 500 in this post, but I have seen many over 700 with stock internal, some are even in 800 range). 2JZ is definitely one of the most durable engine in the world for tuning, but it is heavy.

Here is the appx power you can get out of STOCK engines with STOCK TURBOS…etc.(boost up and cams)

2JZGTE Japanese market-appx 430-450bhp
Other markets with steel blades-over 550bhp
RB26DETT(R32&R33) 460-470bhp
(R34) 480-500bhp
RB25DET(R34) 330-340bhp
VQ30DET(Y34) 340-360bhp
3SGTE(SW20 MR2 Ver5) 340-350bhp
13BTT(FD3S) 400-420bhp

nonturbo engines
3SGE(Altezza) w/Tom’s intake kit 272bhp
F20(S2000) w/mugen exhaust,intake,cams 276bhp
2ZZ(celica) w/exhaust,tom’s intake kit 220bhp
…etc more there.

Of course, you have to change the injectors and tune them right, but I think it is quite impressive for stock motors. don’t you think?

Sure Porsches and Ferraris have wonderful engines, but hey, they cost much more. They do perform very well, but you cannot buy those cars for 20000ukp. and I think Nissan’s new VQ engines have one of the most smooth feeling and quality to it.

I guess the govermental regulations do not allow you to have such high powered cars in Europe, but if you wanna see some, come to Japan, I will show ya. I guess in the North America where the drag racing is big deal have tons of high powered Japanese cars, too.

I will turbocharge your Elise! yeah… right… I am scared of touching K engines… K engines are so scary to touch…I don’t want to touch it… I think I will leave my 340R alone… lol. maybe later…
