I’d have an Exige V6 any day of the week over any Porsche…& I’m a a former GT3 fanboy!
Yeah I have spoken to a few GT3 owners and they are a fortune to track. I used to have a 996 Turbo some years ago as a road car (never tracked it) and that was far from cheap to run as a road car and I’m not even including fuel costs.
Time will tell I guess.
Apart from when you took it around Oulton Park for about 2x laps and gave up…
do like the cayman, and yes that one the other weekend sounded great and went well, but I did go ‘hmmm some new shocks would probably tighten that up a treat’ but then ‘oh right yea, it’s a road car’.
Can see why people would say GT3, I’d have gladly swapped dad his 997 to drive home from anglesey in
Early caymans suffering from knackered liners has really put me off anything before a 2013 model …
big chat about it on PH at the moment.
how many failures have there been?
gotta be 20k of those smaller flat 6 runnign just fine?
There’s a great technical paper (79 pages) downloadable from Hartek’s website. .
seems the smaller engines fare the best whilst the more larger powerful and torquey ones fare the worst.
many many reasons as to why it happens on bank 1 97% of the time too…
rather reminds me of the K series troubles… Coolant flow is one of the many causes…
It’s a really good read for those interested.
The cost of fixing the Porsche flat 6 is very frightening !!
Yeah Porsche have really dropped the ball with engine reliability. There have been issues with most of their engines for well over ten years now.
Not to mention the fiasco with the new GT3…
I’d be looking at a Mk1 or Mk2 996 GT3… pretty bombproof.
I’m more of a 996 mk2 fan, it’s technically better just not as rare so lack forum willy waving rights
and the wing is better
I actually prefer the wing on the Mk1 ! - very nearly bought one but ended up with my M3CSL instead…
Mk1 is going to be worth a bit in a few years !
Discussed this at SSC and their experience so far is positive with the V6 - brakes not getting crazy hot, pads lasting very well … unstressed … so not sure why there would be a lot more cost over a SC CC Honda really ?
Nice to know that there is plenty of relative easy untapped potential as well
I think tyre cost might be the issue here, it is certainly a possible issue as the rears are not cheap and I bet it chews them up…
My car is back up for sale.
A good friend of mine ended up buying it from me as he wanted to realise the vision I had for the car. So off it all went to sit in his garage. Unfortunately he hasn’t had the time to commit to it as he races a Clio Cup car and has just taken the plunge on a new race car, so he has asked me to let it be known that it is back up for grabs.
So anyone who wants the ultimate S1 Exige project, look no further. Drop me a PM if you are interested.
Cheers,
Sean…
