My Brakes Are Crap!

Can Anyone Help?
I have an 05 CUP240, and after 7 or 8 laps of Snetterton I get big vibration under braking and metal grinding sounds. Noticed pad material transferring to the Front discs and upgraded the Front discs to AP 295mm as per Geary’s advice from eliseparts. New set of RS14’s and 7-8 laps of Oulton Park on Tuesday and the same happened again which caused an off at the exit of turn 1. I have ruined 4 trackdays this year trying to get the brakes sorted and have no clue which way to go. I have no mods at all on the car except the new discs. Do i have to get fitted whatever setup the people who race these cars use. ie 4 Pots up front etc.etc. Are there people on here tracking Cup240 cars with no brake problems?
I read a few days ago a post that said some RS14’s were shaped such that they were rubbing the bells but i have no sign of this especially as i had to space the calipers away from the bigger discs by 3mm.

Hi
I had the same problem on 295 APs and it could have been down to the RS14s which were the incorrect straight edged ones. I have since changed to RS42 I am doing Rockingham this weekend which is a brake braker so will see how it goes.

Welcome to the club
I am having so many problems with my brakes, might have to call Gavin kershaw and ask him what he uses
Anyhow the AP CP 5000 sold by Geary are definitively crap and not as good as they are supposed to be… You’d have to buy the Lotus Sports kit I think.

Ive gad all teh same problems…

use pagid 42’s (blue)

Why not ring up Lotus Sport Cadena Racing and see what they use, They don’t seem to have any problems on the race track…

Just an idea

My stock Cup set-up on my Bemani was down to the rivets very quickly after a couple of stints at Hockenheim melted like cheese!

My Lotus dealer’s cars won all the categories in the Swiss Lotus racing scene this year. Part of their secret is the big brakes kit they got Tarox to build for them: larger, well-ventilated, grooved and cross-drilled discs which retain the stock callipers.

I got a set, together with Ferodo 2500 pads and cooling ducts. They’ve stood up so far with various events including Dijon without any probs. Hockenheim next Spring will be the big test.

There are some pics of my set-up in this thread:

Hi jamie
Have you just changed pads or are your ( and so mine ) discs knackered now?

I have a set of front 295 discs which need very light machining to sort them out in the mean time I have new discs and 42 all round

Front brake set-up:

I have had exactly the same problems. Std discs with rs 14s, huge vibrations and grabby…threw the discs in the bin!

295s with (admittedly with the straight edged pads which are the wrong ones) rs14s, the same vibration and pad deposits on the disc…threw the discs in the bin!

Now i have 304mm ap 3000 series discs and the correct shape rs14 pads. I am concerned that i will have the same problem again… the bin is getting rather full!

Its getting a bit expensive this brake development work we customers are having to do!

I could get the Lotus Motorsport four pot set-up but its not for road use, which here in germany makes it a bit dodgy to use with regards to the law and insurance.

Hockenheim on the 11th of November will be the test…

I honestly dont think that the shape of the pad will have much to do with it, and still think you will get all the same problems as before (if not worse).

I have my own theory that the problems are caused by a combination of the pad material (14’s are ceramic based) and the Lotus ABS system causing the pad deposits on the disks (even if you dont physically feel it firing). This is why you dont hear the S1 guys complaining about deposits as they dont have ABS…

Buy a set of 42’s for the front and be done with it!!

Have you been ok with 42s?
Mine now has 42s on - this weekend will be a nice test Rockingham and Cadwell

No problems at all jamie.

First time I used the 14’s at Silverstone, I killed the std discs, I then bought a set of the AP 304’s which got totally destroyed in less than an hour at oulten park using the 14’s still.

New set of 304’s and a new set of 42’s to go with them and they have all been hunky dory (touch wood)!!

Since fitting them I have raced at outlen, donnigton and done trcakdays at croft, spa(x2), and zandvoort… NO PROBLEMS AT ALL!! Only thing I have had to do is put another set of front pads in as they wear down quite quickly, Although saying that I would much prefer to be eating through pads rather than eating through discs!!

p.s I am still using the 14’s in the back, no problems.

Been there, done that. You WILL kill the discs…
I think we definitively will have to go the Cadena way… 4 pots fronts and put the front calipers to the back. I have this setup on my 340r and although it is of course a lighter car never had any problem…

fine for a track car but you lose the handbrake by doing it that way…

I think Gery has a ‘GT hub’ that sorts this…

No you just have to install an hydraulic handbrake on the rear circuit…

You need a mechanical handbrake to pass an MOT though…

Found it

Plans Motorsport and have done four pot fronts, two pot or even four rears (no handbrake), no servo, no abs etc etc conversions. We have the rear uprights for the two pot rear conversion in stock.
