burt

Looks nice that… Fair play guys…

Pete…

God thats gorgeous works so well with the TMRs too .

David

Look great Sean

Real pleased the conversion is so far proving the right way to go - sounds just awesome

Fingers crossed Andy, I guess only time will tell.

OK well quite a lot has been happening over the past couple of weeks since my new turbo arrived. Work did stop while I went on holiday for a week at the start of January, but we are getting there now.

The new turbo didnt end up fitting the way we wanted it. Basically the exhaust and inlet sides of the turbo are now the opposite way around to the original setup, which has meant a lot of new fabrication, for the exhaust and inlet piping.

The pic below shows the new turbo and external waste gate installed

If I put a pic of the original setup below

You can see how the exhaust and inlet piping has got to change.

You can also see that the new turbo is quite a lot bigger than the old one. The are several reasons for this.

  1. The power limit of the old turbo meant we would have had to have run it quite hard, which in turn creates a lot of heat, which is something I didnt want.
  2. We dont think the old turbo would have made the power at the very top of our rev range. Looking at a few dyno graphs at high revs the boost can tail off, plus its bloody hard to control as we found out. We didnt want this for a race car, and I wanted all of the power through all of the rev range and our peak revs is going to be 7,800rpm
  3. The external waste gate on the new setup, will make the boost a lot more controllable. Basically I should be able to have what ever boost level I want at what ever revs I want.
  4. The new turbo when run at full hammer should make the car competitive for other race series that I am thinking about entering, like the AMOC rounds with Russ and Evosal
  5. The new turbo will make the power limit of LOT regs at a reasonably low boost level, so this will mean less heat and less strain and hopefully improved reliability.

So all was going well until I noticed that in shipping from the US three of the blades on the inlet side of the turbo are actually bent, which means its knackered and has got to go back. DOH!!!

A new one is now on its way, so hopefully once the pipe work is all done it shouldnt be too long until it is all mapped and ready to go.

Other new bits that have been fitted are some super juicy 720cc injectors. Thank god I have a friendly MOT man, because at tick over the tester will probably pass out if he walks past the exhaust. Lol. Seriously though, tick over shouldnt be a problem, it may just be raised to 1,200rpm or something to stop it being too lumpy.

Been working pretty much flat out on the car now since October and with the best will in the world, I bet I am still spannering it in the early hours before the first race. lol

That is going to be RAPID !!!

What is the estimated power per tonne at full boost setting ?

I would think that it will be probably more than a Veyron !!!

Its good to see the versitility of the old VAG lump, more power needed so bolt on another bigger turbo wind the boost up a bit for now, then if even more power is required then on with an even bigger turbo and so on. …

With this new set up, will it have more or less lag than the previous one ?

Its a nice neat install sean, keep up the good work…

We need updates you crazy fool!

LOL

Well its back from Pro alloy and I collected my new turbo last night (the old one was damaged), so work starts in ernest this weekend, before mapping next week.

We are probably going to take the engine out tonight and double check everything, plus I want to change the heat reflective sheet I have on the bulkhead as its a bit of a mess.

I will get some pics up as work progresses.

I have ballast resistors arriving for my new injectors tomorrow (I am running low impedance injectors, so ballast resisitors are required with the Emerald) so fingers crossed by the end of the weekend it will be running again with its new setup.

Then here we come 500… cough… I mean 319.9BHP!!!

Sean…

so work starts in ernest this weekend

Is he related to Burt, or did you mean earnest?

Yeah, what he said. You can’t expect me to be able to spell on a Friday, it’s the weekend isn’t it??

No he means his mate Ernest… Sean is also a surgeon in his spare time

Sean is also a surgeon in his spare time

A bloody tree surgeon though!

I like trees.

I like trees.

They are hard though.

Bernard

Yeah I’m with you there. Thankfully I have never hit one, I have hugged a few though!!

Never hit a tree myself, but I did hit a telephone pole in the snow. Wrapped the radiator around the engine, still drove it home though
