As fans of all things rear wheel drive and mid engined (ok the 911’s are rear engined) I didnt think anyone here would mind a pic or 2 of the other loves in my life. Both cars cost me less than 10k each including import and shipping charges. Admittedly the Viper Green one was originally a white 912e with a beetle engine and brakes so has cost me a few bob to get it to its current state but it does go to show that if you look around and get the exchange rate right you can pick up a usable, quick classic that will top 150mph, with cheapo insurance for mondeo money. Better still and from personal experience old Porsches tend to go up in value, certainly more fun and better than sticking your hard earned in the bank right now!
The Viper green '76 was originally from North America but since hitting our shores 2 yrs ago has had a bare metal restoration and is slowly being turned into a track toy, currently has new bilstein suspension, thicker anti roll bars, boxster brakes and a 204bhp 3.0 SC engine from a mid '80s 911. Next on the list is a colour coded half roll cage, Motordrive seats and a LSD.
The black '74 targa was imported from california last year and is unrestored and rust free, bought purely as an investment and for sunny weekend posing (!)
I nearly bought an ex carrera cup 964 that was road registered. It had a 16 point cage, plastic windows, no interior, heater, etc and decent Intrax suspension. I bottled out at the last minute as I noticed that the owner was shouting back answers to me every time I asked him a question. It dawned on me that he was a bit deaf from using the car daily, just as I was planning too…suffice to say i didnt buy it - too hard core and loud to drive further than a mile. It was also only 50kg’s lighter than my green 911, the 911’s got progressively heavier with every incarnation meaning the early cars are nice and light but still have some creature comforts.
964’s are in my eyes the last of the proper air cooled porkers as the 993 is too soft looking and has “comfort” rear suspension which robs the car of some of that essential 911’ness.
Tell you what, if my garage was big enough would definitely have an air cooled 911 to compliment the Exige
Have been fortunate to have owned a 964RS several years back, but only for it to be stolen and never seen again. That was in another classic porsche colour maritime blue with colour coded cage… almost as good as the viper green:)
Think there is something very primitive and unfussy with the early 911s, as well as that terrific sound
Envious!!
Good to see another Viper green car coming to life and another non sunroof car too - I had a nightmare getting a non sunroof car, almost as rare as Viper green itself.
Sorry to hear about your 964rs. At least you can rest assured it hasn’t been broken up for parts, they’re way too valuable. It’s probably in the middle east somewhere. They are very nickable, I parked up outside my sons school to take him home and when we came back to the car there was a note on the windscreen from a passer by letting me know that he’d witnessed 2 dodgy blokes photographing the car, writing down the reg and trying the door handles, to this day I can’t fathom out if they were old bill, Porsche anoraks or genuine car thieves.
The more I drive the car the more I love it…then something seeming “little” goes wrong and I get a bill for 4 figures ! Still I haven’t found anything else (except the Exige) that offers such light, feel some steering.
