Motorsport questions

After tracking a s1 Elise for 5 years I took the plunge and bought a 2000 motorsport elise , I’ve done about 4 time trials and had a few problems that to plague me every time I go out. I would appreciate any helpful advice!
History of the car is that it has been sitting since 2003, prior to being mothballed had a motor rebuild done (Scholar evo 4 specifications) when I got the car I changed all the fluids and filters got new tires and hit the track.
The first question I have is there is a little red light on the side of the tack, that starts flashing at about 8,000 rpm. I know its not a oil presser light, I can see that I have about 55 psi, wondering if this is a fuel presser light (light only comes on when motor is under a load) according to the dyno sheets max hp is at 8900 rpm so I would like to be able to spin to that.
Second question is the shift linkage at the gear box appears to be very different than the standard elise or exige, the reason I ask is there seems to be a shifting problem when I use 5th gear( when I go into 5th I then can not down shift) I’m not sure if the problem is internal or linkage related. I’ve tried making adjustments to the linkage with no success.
cheers Keith

Hi Keith, sounds to me like the car needs a bit of a look over. The linkage probably needs lubricating and adjusting. As far as your light goes, without knowing what dash etc is in it, its impossible to say.

These cars really don’t like standing, dampness etc efects the wiring and all of te moving parts. We have seen some ex autobytel cars that although were very shiny on the outside, were in a very poor state under the covers.

Get some pics up, lets have a look at her.

If its a Stack 8100 series ( The triangle type box with rev counter in middle and LCD display underneath ) the right hand RED light is the shift light and the left yellow light a warning lamp for any alarm conditions.

I had one of those in my sprint mini and you can ( of course) set that shift light to whatever you want … the actual rev limiter will be in the ECU or whatever …

You can download manuals from the STACK web site.

I’d be very wary about spinning a VHPD to 8900rpm!

Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Led Zep etc all have one thing in comman to help achieve that you know

I agree, I don’t reckon a VHPD crank would stand 8900 for very long. Mind you I have no clue what Scholar put in there engines. I’m sure Dave Andrews will help out as he must know these things.

I used to rev my standard 1.8 crank engine to 9,300rpm right up until the time it stopped. Which I don’t think was due to revs, well not 9,300 of them anyway.

Hi Keith, Great choice on a Sport Elise!

You should have 4 buttons connected to the Stack dash. Press 1 and 2 together to enter the configuration mode. 3 changes to the next parameter. 1 decreases the value, 2 increases it and 4 quits config mode.
Like mentioned previously the red light is exclusively the gear change indicator and yellow for all other alarms.

The gearchange not self centring or staying in gear can be as simple as one of the nuts on the gearbox end of the linkage being done up way too tight.

Cheers
