Motor bike exhaust

Anyone ever install a bike muffler on their Exige?

I’m in the middle of installing a Yoshimura carbon fiber race can off of an old GSXR1100. It’s got a 2 1/4" inlet and outlet just like the stock exhaust but it’s wieght is only 2.5 lbs as opposed to the 19.5 lbs of the Lotus sport exhaust I remomved.
By welding on a 90 deg bend and one of the old flanges from the old exhaust, the muffler bolted right up to the stock flange on the flex pipe.
Sounds awesome!!

Trackday organisers are so strict over in the uk most tracks/trackdays have a 98db limit so might be a bit loud for uk tracks, I’m sure it’ll sound great though

Yes, I almost forgot about the sound police that you guy’s have to deal with. I’ve only got one track that I go to that has a noise restriction but I can’t remember off hand what the db limit is.
One option that you guy’s might have is to use a Supertrapp muffler, they have tuning disks that can be add or subtracted to change the sound level.
Nothing like hacking another 17 lbs off the car

As long as you’re not losing bhp & torque in the process

Not saying you are, Mike, but it’s worth checking after all you’ve been through!

Not an Exige, but same engine in a 340R - Peter Crook did this some time ago and I have to say I’ve sat in my armchair looking at all the various exhaust modifications that have passed acroos these boards, and wondered why nobody has followed this lead.

Peter’s site is also an excellent source of all sorts of information applicable to Exige owners by dint of its similarities to the 340R.

The thought did cross my mind, but those 6-7 90deg bends could not have been helping things much.
I will eventually put the car back on the rollers to check out what effect it has had, I’m thinking that it might cause a small loss at some point in the bottom end or midrange but will definetly be a gain on the top end.

Of course I will post my findings

Wow! I just checked the reg’s on the track that I plan on attending next month and they have a noise restriction of 85db
I guess I’ll have to strap a coffee can to the end of my muffler

it won’t be the bends that lose you the power it’ll be the length of the pipe, there will be an optimum length the pipe has to be.

85db

How about this one for a loud pipe . Found this pic a few months ago, Wouldn’t mind hearing it. Couldn’t figure out how to post it in the thread so click the link, Or if anyone knows how to then please help

That’s basicaly the layout of what I have now, but with a longer CF can.
The only difference is the price, 380,000 Yen compared to Free!.. I’ll take FREE!!

I’ve just got to fab up a bracket to hold it up.

There’s somebody else in the US that does a titanium one.

I think carbon is not going to last a lot.
On a bike there’s airflow all around and even so, on my bike racing days the carbon around the flanges burnt off.
In the Exige exhaust bay there’s little air movement and the resins on that can are going to burn if driven hard.
I await to be corrected, so why don’t you take it to a track and tell us the results? (because I would love a lightweight carbon can)

Meanwhile a similar idea was done by 2bular
I changed the stock one for a Powerspeed that was 6 Kg lighter.
Then I installed the 2bular, which was 5 Kg lighter than the Powerspeed

Not bad!

Uldis - is your system a prototype one or is it a final production version?

How are you getting on with it?

It’s very close to be the final one but there will be changes.
Noise-wise, I think it sounds louder than the Powerspeed, but somehow the noise quality is different, as it’s less violent, but at high rpms sounds fantastic, much more like a bike.

Thing is, we tested it on Sat with a digital db meter and it’s 95 db at 1/2 meter, 45 deg angle and 4500 rpm! (Powerspeed was 97db)
So, it reads low in the db meter, but at idle it thumps your chest if you’re behind the car.
Different sound quality definitely. Will be at KH this weekend and will measure the drive by noise, as the silencer could be still be made quieter.

The only two things that are definitely going to change is the exhaust tip and I’ll try soon a different secondary length version that should take care of the slight loss between 2.7K - 4.5K

But the big plus points that I see is that it weighs next to nothing, is repackable without taking the undertray off and the manifold is split in two sections, so working on the car is sooo much easier. Ah, and the best power as well (from 5K to 8.5K)

Light as a bike system, but then Jim used to make race bike exhausts in the past…

Excellent - keep us posted.

Just a PS to Uldis’s post - (sorry for the thread drift Mikelr).
Uldis is running JV3 at the moment. JV1 did prove (to me) that the straight-back concept would bring appreciable gains. JV2 had to show me the NOISE emissions could be brought under control - else there was not much point in continuing (given the way the regs are going these days) - it did. JV3 certainly brought the gains into a more useable area of the rev range. JV4 was ready six months ago and I was persuaded that an Emerald Dyno graph would help with credence. The exhaust was duly despatched …
Anyway, there’s two more JV4’s out there now and maybe one day an Emerald graph will be produced, but different car, different dyno - not relevant really. Uldis’s Exige is the “control” car and I will find the time to fit a JV4 and run it on the same dyno I’ve always used. Some clown on a Dyno web-site claims it’s a “generous” dyno(!) - the Dastek actually reads 5BHP lower than the Emerald but the concept of a generous dyno amuses me. Lend us a Tenner mate?!

Hopefully, before the Donington trackday (assuming Uldis is attending) so we can all have a look and listen to it please?

Yes, I believe Uldis plans to attend that meeting. JV4 will be fitted to his car in two weeks time.

I’ll be there!
