MOT Friendly Map / Advice

Well its that time of the year again, but first time for me with the Exige…

I’ve been reading post after post about struggling to getting them through the mot’s and am hoping i’m not going to have any problems

If any of you could help me with these questions, would be greatly appreciated

Is there such a thing as an MOT friendly map for emeralds ?

Will i need to sort out the strong fuel smell on start up (always done it since I’ve had the car) - any thoughts on why or is it a case of TADTS

And yes, i know I’ll have to take the cat out of the box under the stairs and put it on the car

Thanks,

Paul

Just got to JPS in Newcastle, that is a very freindly MOT place

lol, Am sure dan ‘could’ be very MOT friendly but havent got any holiday left at work at the moment to pay him a visit

Give Chris Foulds a ring, he’s near Huddersfield - must be alt closer…

Hi Paul,

I was a bit worried about the first MOT with my Emerald-equipped car, but in fact it was nowhere near as bad as I’d feared. Dave Walker provides instructions for the procedure, which basically consists of leaning-out the mixture using the quick-adjust feature of the software until the tester gets readings they’re happy with. Obviously you need a laptop connected to do this, so a bit of advance preparation will be required (in my case, I needed a USB/RS232 converter to connect the Emerald to the lappy, and a bit of familiarisation with the software is vital) but it’s not complicated to do. I did go to one test centre run by a moody bloke who barely had the time of day for me, but my second try went much better and it got through quickly and easily.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the response, do you still have the instructions handy ?

Thanks,

Paul

Can you let us know what Dave told you? and how to setup the emerald ECU to run a little bit more lean…

Cheers

your probably best emailing emerald directly at [email protected] they’ll be able to advise what to adjust depending on your current set up

Make sure you save your old map before you make any changes though !!!

My car is an August 2000 registered - am I right in thinking pre Sept 2000 cars don’t need CATs fitted due to higher emmissions allowance up to this date?

Er, no.

The only pre-cat cars with higher limits dated from early 90s, I think, when cats were still optional. Once compulsory, the new rules kicked in for all cars.

Anything other than SVA models (limited to 50 cars per model) need to meet modern rules.

[quote]Er, no.

Any chance it could pass without a cat?

My mot is due this week, so i thought i’d check the cars emissions before taking her for the test. The cars running an Emerald, no cat, Piper 1444 cams. I managed to reduce the CO, using the injection trim feature on the laptop but the HC is reading over 1000ppm. Possibly due to a misfire so will be changing the plugs and leads tomorrow. Is it common to see such a high HC if the engine is running ok?

many thanks.

It wont get thru without the cat Graham!

I tried loads of things… before going to the friendly guys! Put the Cat on… leave the undertray off… will only take 15 mins, and you have practiced on mine!!!

Pete

Hi Pete,

Sorry to hear your not going on tuesday, i know how much you love Oulton.

The problem i’ve got is that i don’t have a cat to fit to the car, so will need to go for plan B.

cheers,

Graham.

I have a cat - don’t know how good it is, as I took it off once the car was run in & the 190 upgrade done in March 2001. You’re very welcome to try it - I’m up in Bolton, but I’ll be working in Salford Quays for the next couple of days.
