I was a bit worried about the first MOT with my Emerald-equipped car, but in fact it was nowhere near as bad as I’d feared. Dave Walker provides instructions for the procedure, which basically consists of leaning-out the mixture using the quick-adjust feature of the software until the tester gets readings they’re happy with. Obviously you need a laptop connected to do this, so a bit of advance preparation will be required (in my case, I needed a USB/RS232 converter to connect the Emerald to the lappy, and a bit of familiarisation with the software is vital) but it’s not complicated to do. I did go to one test centre run by a moody bloke who barely had the time of day for me, but my second try went much better and it got through quickly and easily.
My car is an August 2000 registered - am I right in thinking pre Sept 2000 cars don’t need CATs fitted due to higher emmissions allowance up to this date?
The only pre-cat cars with higher limits dated from early 90s, I think, when cats were still optional. Once compulsory, the new rules kicked in for all cars.
Anything other than SVA models (limited to 50 cars per model) need to meet modern rules.
My mot is due this week, so i thought i’d check the cars emissions before taking her for the test. The cars running an Emerald, no cat, Piper 1444 cams. I managed to reduce the CO, using the injection trim feature on the laptop but the HC is reading over 1000ppm. Possibly due to a misfire so will be changing the plugs and leads tomorrow. Is it common to see such a high HC if the engine is running ok?
I tried loads of things… before going to the friendly guys! Put the Cat on… leave the undertray off… will only take 15 mins, and you have practiced on mine!!!
I have a cat - don’t know how good it is, as I took it off once the car was run in & the 190 upgrade done in March 2001. You’re very welcome to try it - I’m up in Bolton, but I’ll be working in Salford Quays for the next couple of days.

Thanks for the offer Rob. I’ll try plan B first. Will keep you posted.
